The Orange Ballroom Plans to Plead Guilty; Has Over $300K Worth of Debt

In March this year, The Orange Ballroom, a wedding venue, was ordered to close for 20 days for “egregious breaches” of COVID-19 regulations. They were caught having three receptions on the same day.

Apparently, on 30 Jan, wedding organiser Osman Arrifin had held a wedding with a total of 235 attendees at the Orange Ballroom.

In any other year in history besides 2020, this would have been perfectly fine. The problem was that there was a group size limit of 100 attendees at the time.

It seems that the 59-year-old had conducted three wedding receptions that day, from 10:30am to 6pm. There were 62, 73, and 60 attendees at each reception.

In addition to exceeding the permissible group size, Osman is accused of allowing 18 guests to attend more than one wedding reception that day. He allegedly failed to take all reasonable steps to ensure that the guests attended only the reception they were invited to at a specific time.

Osman was working as a representative for the Orange Ballroom, but both parties are now in trouble.

Both Plan to Plead Guilty, With Over $300K Worth of Debt

Both Osman and the company were charged in court today (10 Nov) with breaching COVID-19 regulations.

This is the first time someone has been charged for breaching safe management measures at marriage solemnisations and wedding receptions.

Osman said both he and the company plan to plead guilty and have chosen not to engage lawyers due to the “financial status of the company”.

Because COVID-19 restrictions impeded operations last year, the company owes $300,000 in rental payments, which they have requested to pay in instalments.

Osman said the company had refunded over $200,000 to wedding couples when their weddings could not proceed last year as well. They also lost thousands of dollars during the two-week suspension in March because they had to move nine affected clients to other venues.

Well, you kind of have yourselves to blame for that one.

If found guilty, the Orange Ballroom could face a fine of up to $10,000 for its first offence.

Meanwhile, Osman could be fined up to $10,000, imprisoned for up to six months, or both.
