I have to admit that a sight like this is pretty uncommon in Singapore. We often only see one or two people on any type of motorbike, Vespa or the like.
Three? Now that’s uncommon. Unsurprisingly, it has netizens in a frenzy over safety concerns, probably because a child is involved.
Parents Riding With Toddler On Vespa Has Netizens In A Frenzy Over Safety Concerns
A video was uploaded to Facebook page Singapore Road Vigilante on 9 December showing three people riding on a Vespa.
A child can be seen to be sardined between the two adults as they go on their merry way. At least they’re wearing helmets… right?
To be very honest, this sight is pretty common in other countries, but not so much in Singapore. This is probably why the person decided to take a video and share it on social media.
You can watch the full video here:
At a certain part of the video, the woman took her hands off the child to readjust her bag strap.
It’s like watching a horror movie and anticipating that something bad is going to happen.
They were later seen driving into a condominium.
Netizens Enraged
Many netizens took to the comment section to voice their horror. Most of them did not agree with what the parents did and felt that they were putting the child in danger.
One netizen even asked for the rider’s driving license to be revoked.
Another netizen felt that the behaviour of those on the roads was getting worse and worse.
At least one netizen speculated that the individuals seen on the Vespa were foreigners.
However, not every netizen felt that it was dangerous for the child and that sitting between the parents was the “safest place”.
At the end of the day, the child’s safety is the most important factor regardless if we agree or disagree with the incident.
According to the Driver Improvement Points System, the penalty for “carrying excess pillion or pillion is not sitting astride” is a $150 fine and three demerit points.
