To put things into perspective in holiday terms, $14,000 could have been used to purchase 700 cans of Pineapple Tarts or approximately 560 steamboats.
That being said, $14,000 is certainly not a small sum of money, especially when it is the price to pay for a crime with arguable contempt.
On 6 January 2021, a Singaporean employer was fined $14,000 for failing to pay a foreign domestic worker for 13 months from April 2018 to April 2019.

I am sure most people would already be furious for not being paid the 13th month bonus, much less 13 actual months. However, there is more to the story.
What Happened
To give a little context, the FDW, Montefolka, was on a holiday in the Philippines when her employer, Theresa, told Montefolka not to come back to Singapore. This is because Theresa no longer needed Montefolka to take care of his father, following his death.
However, Montefolka implored Theresa to continue her employment and Theresa eventually purchased a ticket for Montefolka back to Singapore.
Much like I did not realise my milk mustache from this morning, Theresa too did not realise she had broken the law at that time.
Subsequently, from August 2018 to April 2019, Montefolka was allegedly hired as a maid by another employer without a working pass, which is illegal. As a result, Theresa would not be required to compensate Montefolka legally, which amounted to a total $6,500.
Eventual Sentencing
Defense Lawyer Barry Delaney pleaded with the judge for a $8,000 fine. He justified that it was ultimately not a story of abuse but more so a story out of kindness.
While he made a compelling case, the judge remained firmed at $14,000. Even though there was no abuse, Theresa still failed to pay Montelfolka and she should have known better as she had employed maids in the past.
Given the twists and turns of this case, it is tough to pinpoint the blame on someone. However, this deserves a sigh of relief as there was no physical abuse involved in this case of sentencing.

Wait There’s More
As if the day could not get any better for Theresa, she also faces other charges for cheating. She is apparently linked to rental scams where victims are tricked into paying a few thousand dollars each.
She faces a maximum of a 10-year jail term and fine for cheating.
In retrospect, $14,000 may not be that hefty after all.
