While using PayNow might be second nature for most of us, there’s no doubt that there’s a learning curve when learning how to use the e-payment feature.
And that’s exactly what happened to a woman who purchased various dim sum and dumpling items from a stall at the Block 201 Tampines Street 21 coffee shop on Thursday (6 April).
Instead of paying $44.50 for her items, she accidentally paid $4,450 instead.
After she made the payment and left, even the stallholder was shocked to see that she had received a four-figure sum for the dim sum (pun intended).
She even thought about leaving the store to find the customer in order to return the money to the latter.
Thankfully, the customer realised that she had keyed in the wrong amount later that day, prompting her to return to the store and get a refund.
Stallholders’ Recount
When speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the stallholders of the stall recalled how the lady purchased har gow (shrimp dumpling), green bean balls, Nonya rice dumplings and meat dumplings from their stall at 6.36 am that day.
Well, to be fair, I probably would’ve keyed in the wrong amount, too, if I had to go out and buy food at 6 am.
The stallholders, 58-year-old Chen Deming (Hanyu pinyin) and 55-year-old Zhang Mingfang (Hanyu pinyin), added that the lady looked like she was in her 40s.
They also disclosed that they only started running their dim sum and dumpling stall only about a month ago, which was why receiving such a large amount of money was a huge shock to them.
On another note, Mr Chen said that his wife, Ms Zhang, was the only one manning the stall at that point in time.
Ms Zhang then recounted how she checked her phone to confirm the customer’s payment around five minutes after she paid.
This was because the customer’s order was a rather large one.
Initially, she even thought that her eyes were playing tricks on her when she saw the $4,450 PayNow transfer from the customer.
However, she soon realised that the customer had indeed transferred them the wrong amount.
After her realisation, Ms Zhang wanted to try and search for the customer but was unable to as she was the only one manning her stall at that point in time.
She also said that it was the first time something like that had happened at her stall.

Lady Came Back After 2 Hours for a Refund, Said it Was Her First Time Using PayNow
Thankfully, Ms Zhang did not need to go out and search for the customer, for the latter returned to ask for a refund on the same day.
According to Ms Zhang, the customer returned to the stall with her husband around two hours later at around 8.30 am that day.
Ms Zhang had temporarily left the stall when the customer arrived, prompting the customer to wait for Ms Zhang to return.
Once Ms Zhang returned to her stall, she immediately recognised the customer and processed the refund quickly.
According to Ms Zhang, the customer explained that it was her first time using PayNow to carry out transfers.
