When iPhone X was released recently, the world felt like technology has become even more unbeatable.
I mean, unlocking something confidential with your face?
I saw that on The Incredibles when I was in kindergarten.
And that’s very long ago.
However, just like humans, technology is never perfect.
Does ‘a failure in signalling system’ ring any bells?
According to Apple Daily, some iPhone X buyers were not so happy with their new purchase.
While it was already known to many, users were still shocked when their phone was unable to function properly in harsh, cold weather (pretty sure we Singaporeans hope we’ve this problem, but no, it’s still summer tomorrow).
On a side note, this situation applies to all iPhone users, and is not an ‘exclusive’ problem faced by iPhone X users.
According to Sing Tao, this is most commonly seen when the indoor and outdoor temperature varies a lot.
Why it happens
According to The Sun, our phones are charged using lithium-ion batteries. And this type of battery can be easily affected by extreme temperatures.
The temperature range in which our phone can operate normally in is 0 to 35 degrees Celsius.
Other than that, using our phones in the cold can also shorten its battery life.
The material that keeps our phones charged, electrolyte liquid, freezes when it gets too cold.
This will then temporarily prevents electricity from flowing to where it’s supposed to.
Result: phone dies.
An Apple spokesperson told Business Insider: “We also want our customers to know that an iPhone is actually designed to shut down automatically under certain conditions, such as extremely cold temperature.
“To an iPhone user, some of those shutdowns might seem unexpected, but they are designed to protect the device’s electronics from low voltage.”
How Apple fixed it
Upon confirming the situation, Apple rolled out a new software update within a week, according to Forbes.
Pretty impressive huh?
I’m not sure if it works, but Gotta Be Mobile says it works fine so far.
Tips for your phone to survive in the cold weather
Tenor Share gave users some tips so that you’ll not freak out when your phone dies on you:
1. Keep your phone in your pocket (as near to your body as possible).
2. Use a high-tech thermal protection case.
3. Make sure you turn off your iPhone if you leave it in the car. Warm it up before you turn it on again.
4. A portable battery always comes in handy when your phone dies.
5. Apple recommends to reboot your iPhone and update the time zone.
After rebooting, go to Settings, General , Date & Time. Turn on Set Automatically.
6. Clear any junk and turn off all unused apps. You can download iCareFone, a professional iOS cleaner.
7. There’s a free iOS reboot tool that you can use ReiBoot. It forcefully boot your iPhone using the recovery mode.
8. Throw away your iPhone and buy an Android phone (this point is added by the editor who is editing this article. He happens to be an Android user)
Who is at fault
While Apple has a newly improved software to fix the problem, they’ve also investigated deeper into the matter so as to target the root cause, THE INVESTOR reports.
Apple pointed the fault towards South Korean mobile component provider Interflex.
The report stated that up to 45% of the RF PCB (Radio Frequency Printed Circuit Boards) used by Apple is provided by Interflex.
The RF PCB is responsible for connecting the chip to the relevant parts of the phone.
When the circuit is faulty, the iPhone X OLED screen will also be faulty.
Interflex has stopped production to cooperate with investigations.
If you’re heading to somewhere cold this season, I’ve warned you.
