No one, even Untidy Uriel, likes seeing a street littered with trash.
But the problem is that no one likes picking it up either.
We have no problem keeping our houses neat and tidy, with floors clean enough to eat food off them, but our mindset tends to change the moment we leave our homes.
Fortunately, in addition to the hardworking cleaners who keep our streets clean, a mother and her kids did their bit to help Singapore live up to its clean and green image.
Mum & Kids Voluntarily Picked Up Litter Along in Geylang Filming Themselves Doing So
A woman and her two children have gone viral on social media after they were seen picking up trash along streets along Lorong 29 Geylang.
The video was shared on TikTok yesterday (20 Nov).
What netizens appreciated is that they weren’t the ones who filmed themselves engaging in the considerate act, which is something we often see social media users do for likes, primarily to virtue signal.
Watch this video to the end to know what virtue signalling is:
The short, 30-second video shows a woman and two young boys walking along the streets with plastic FairPrice bags, picking up litter they see along the way with a pair of tongs.
Man Who Filmed Video Said He Was “Embarrassed”
The man who filmed the video said he felt “embarrassed”, noting that not even Singaporeans wouldn’t do such a thing.
Calling the trio “Mat Salleh” – a Malay term used to refer to white people – the man said it was these people who are keeping the community clean.
Netizen Reaction
Amusingly, the video was reposted on the Facebook group Complaint Singapore, where many people agreed with the man and praised the woman and her kids for their exemplary behaviour.
Most of the commenters also lauded the woman for her top-notch parenting skills, and how she’s set a good example for her kids.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened.
Japanese Man Picks Up Trash In Singapore Because He Likes Our Country
Back in 2019, when parties were still legal, a Japanese man was spotted by a netizen walking around the streets of Singapore to pick up trash.
When asked why he was doing this, the man said he came from Japan and had been in Singapore for two months. He was going to leave the next week, but said he liked Singapore and wanted to keep it clean and green.
Wow.
We can certainly learn a lot from these people. If we value the place we call home, then we should do our best to keep it clean, and not just when the law compels us to do so.
