Time and time again, we were reminded to stare at our candles or our cooking on the gas stove. But why?
Well, because these items have the possibility of turning into a raging fire in a split second.
This time the raging fire is due to unattended oil lamps at a praying altar.
Unattended Oil Lamps at a Praying Alter Allegedly Caused Fire at Pinnacle @ Duxton
On 4 Nov, a fire broke out in a unit at Pinnacle @ Duxton. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at 8.35pm.
The firefighters from Marina Bay Fire Station rushed to the unit on the 34th floor of Block 1E Cantonment Road to find the fire still raging within the unit. The fire was extinguished with a water jet.
Thankfully, no one was in the unit during the fire. However, the unit did not get away scot-free; as seen in the Facebook post, the unit was affected by the heat and smoke badly.
Around 40 residents were evacuated by the police, and no one was injured.
What Caused the Fire?
The fire was caused by “naked flames” in the affected room; more specifically, lit oil lamps that were left unattended at the praying altar.
The SCDF remind the public to not leave lit material unattended.
What to do in a Fire?
In an unfortunate incident where a fire broke out, there are a few things you should do:
- Assess the fire
- If the fire is manageable and there is a fire extinguisher or hose reel nearby, you may utilise it
- If the fire is too large, call 995 immediately
How to Use the Fire Extinguisher?
There are four steps to use the fire extinguisher using the P.A.S.S. method:
- Pull out the safety pin
- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the lever
- Sweep the fire using the extinguisher’s discharge
How to Operate A Hose Reel?
- Turn on the hose reel valve at the bottom of the hose reel in an anti-clockwise direction
- Pull the hose and head towards the fire
- Turn on the water at the nozzle and direct it to the base of the fire
Other Raging Fire
This is not the first raging fire that went out of hand in a residential area. Last month in Jurong, there was a personal mobility device (PMD) fire that broke out in the HDB flat.
Sadly, an occupant of the flat passed away due to the fire. Another man who had self-evacuated was also injured.
