Police Looking Into Man Who Punched a Taxi Driver Along Beach Road

A man got into the wrong vehicle, then punched the taxi driver when he was asked to leave the car.

The police are currently investigating this incident after a report on the 23 April incident was made. Here’s what happened.

Assaulted Taxi Driver

According to Malcom Keating, a Yale-NUS assistant professor in Philosophy, he and his fellow colleagues had been waiting for their booked car at around 10pm, at the junction of Arab Street and Beach Road.

Since nightlife businesses have just been resumed, the roads were understandably packed, with drivers and passengers having a hard time finding each other.

When Keating finally found their designated ride, they saw that there was already another man sitting inside.

Keating told the Mothership that their driver was initially unaware that he had picked up the wrong passenger until he saw the trio. Upon realising his mistake, he asked the man to leave.

Then the man punched the taxi driver in the face.

When confronted, the man then pushed Keating into the oncoming traffic, and later gave him the middle finger during his great escape.

Lodged Police Report, Man Under Investigations

The following morning (24 Apr), Keating makes his Twitter account accessible to the public and attaches the video evidence he had taken, declaring that he has lodged a police report against the drunkard, under the case number A/20220323/0139.

The taxi driver probably also did the same thing.

The power of social media has also helped in this case, as netizens had helped to identify the man through Keating’s videos. He has also given that information to the police.

Since then, the police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.

ComfortDelGro Responds

The group’s chief branding and communications officer Tammy Tan said on 25 April that the company has contacted the taxi driver.

They will be waiving his rental for the three days of medical leave he was given.

Ms Tan then added that those who have been assaulted were told not to retaliate when faced with a threatening situation. Instead, they should try and remember as much as they can, so that they can file a police report.

The driver should also forward the report to the company for follow-up action. The company will then help with their medical claims, losses, and rental waiver.

ComfortDelGro will also recompensate the drivers for their loss in income when they are required to attend court as witnesses.

Ms Tan has thanked Keating and his friends for helping the driver, and for bringing this case to ComfortDelGro’s attention.
