The PAP managed to win a “strong” mandate in GE2020 but if you were to look at PM Lee’s speech in the early morning, you wouldn’t think so.

And yes, he has a good reason for being so “sombre”, as Eugene Tan on the CNA live show predicted.

Because while they managed to retain 83 out of the 93 seats available, maintaining a supermajority in parliament, they have lost a lot of political ground.

This election, the PAP only managed to get 61.24 per cent of the popular votes in GE2020, the second-lowest percentage since independence.

VisualLearning45: Dude, you’re not making sense here. I should’ve just gone to watch Jamus Lim’s ‘cockles of my gamxia‘ again.

Okay, wait, let me show you a picture.

A Total Red Card:

And as you can tell, with the exception of Macpherson SMC (Tin Pei Ling‘s ward) and Mountbatten SMC (Lim Biow Chuan’s ward), they had a reduction of votes in every other constituency except for those that were newly created for GE2020.

In Aljunied GRC, where the PAP was hoping to finally get it back after almost winning it in the last election saw the team there utterly crushed by the might of the WP team, helmed by Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh.

At West Coast GRC, one of PAP’s strongholds on the island, more than 26% of the votes swung towards the PSP team led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

The Next 5 Years

With this result, it seems that PAP is, once again, determined to win back the support of the people again, at least according to the speech by PM Lee after GE2020.

He had also said that Mr Pritam Singh of the Workers’ Party (WP) will be declared officially as the Opposition Leader and be given resources and staff to help carry out his duties.

One thing for sure: Singaporeans have sent their message to the ruling party. Now, all we can do is to see how they’ll react to the love message sent over.

And on a side note, politicians have been talking about NCMP (Non-Constituency Member of Parliament) in recent days. So, what’s an NCMP? Do you know that it’s just like an MP but the allowance is much lower? Watch this video to find out more:
