Let’s say you’re someone who’s always wanted to commit a crime because you’re bored and believe it’ll give you a rush like nothing else would.
Even though you’re excited by the thought, you bide your time and wait for the right moment to strike.
One day, during a pandemic, you come across a hand sanitiser bottle near a lift and decide to make a little mischief by pouring it on the lift’s floor.
Seconds after committing your misdeed, you realise it was an incredibly stupid thing to do, and the only rush you feel is the gust of air in your hair as you speed away from the scene of the crime.
So, what do you do next?
Well, you could own up to your crime, like a normal person would, or you could do what this man did instead.
Man Fined For Pouring Hand Sanitiser in Lift On the Floor
A 50-year-old man was fined S$4,000 today (24 Jul) for pouring hand sanitiser all over the floor of an HDB lift in Bishan and tearing down posters in the lift.
On 21 March, at around 4.36am, Low Ken Lum removed a hand sanitiser bottle placed in the lift for common use and poured its contents all over the floor.
He also tore down two posters in the lift and threw them on the floor before leaving, reported CNA.
Once was not enough though, so he did the exact same thing again on 27 March – pouring hand sanitiser on the floor and tearing down two posters.
As with many inexplicable crimes in 2020, we can only ask… why?
Claimed to be ‘Disinfecting the Lift’
After the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council received feedback from a resident on several occasions about Low’s behaviour, a town council officer lodged a police report.
Since Low’s crime was caught on CCTV both times, it wasn’t difficult for the police to determine who the culprit was.
According to CNA, Low claimed he had poured the hand sanitiser on the floor because he wanted to “disinfect the lift”.
If you think that’s bad, you should hear his excuse for tearing down those posters.
Low said he tore down the two posters because they were not put up properly, and he wanted to put them up again with his own tape but “forgot to do so”.
This is the kind of lie you’d expect a 7-year-old child to tell his parents, not an excuse a 50-year-old would give for committing a crime.
Intentions Weren’t “Evil”
Low pleaded guilty to two charges of mischief for his acts, which caused wrongful loss to the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council, reported CNA.
In court, the poster-destroyer said that his intentions were not “evil”, adding that his objective was to “kill as many virus as possible” as the lift was “smelly and unhygienic”.
I’m sure the residents of Bishan-Toa Payoh are grateful for your efforts.
Low also asked for leniency, saying he had a skin condition and was very concerned about hygiene.
The 50-year-old was fined S$4,000 but he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, or both, for each count of mischief.
Spitting on Lift Buttons
Months ago, there was a disgusting trend of spitting on lift buttons going around, leading many to question: What the heck did lifts do to deserve such abuse?
Some people also stomped on lift buttons with their dirty-ass shoes, and ended up on Stomp as a result.
These two trends seem to have died out and now people are pouring hand sanitiser all over lift floors, which is admittedly a much cleaner crime.
I guess this is progress?
