The Platform Workers Act is slated to come into effect on 1 January 2025.
If you still don’t know what the Platform Workers Act is about, we only have one thing to say to you: have you been living under a rock? Anyways, here’s a video simplifying what the new Act is about, so you can be less sua ku:
With the introduction of the new Platform Workers Act, most ride-hailing and food delivery platforms will also be increasing their platform fees.
A sian moment for consumers, but at least platform workers will finally be getting the protections they’ve deserved for a long time lah (as well as more CPF).
Here’s a summary of how much all the common ride-hailing and food delivery platforms will be increasing their platform fees by, so that you won’t kena “stun like vegetable” when you book a PHV next year.
Grab Increasing Platform Fee to $0.60 for Food Delivery; $0.90 for Ride-Hailing
We’ll start with Grab lah, hor? On Tuesday (24 December), Grab announced that it would be increasing its platform fees by $0.20 from 1 January 2025 onwards, as the platform fee will now include a partner fee.
Presumably the “partner fee” means it’s for the platform workers lah, hor?
So, what does this mean for you? It means that the next time you use GrabFood, GrabMart, or the courier delivery service GrabExpress, you’ll be charged a platform fee of $0.60 per order.
For ride-hailing, Grab will charge a platform fee of $0.90 per trip from 1 January 2025 onwards. However, you should note that for ride-hailing, there is also a $0.50 driver fee per trip — this “driver fee” will be in effect until 30 June 2025.
Huh? I thought already got “partner fee” included in the “platform fee”? Why still need “driver fee”? So many fees, which is which sia?
Well, according to Shin Min Daily News, unlike the partner fee, the driver fee completely belongs to the PHV driver to offset fuel costs and other costs. The driver fee applies to all Grab ride-hailing services (such as JustGrab or GrabCar) except for standard taxis.
Grab shared that the revised platform and partner fee will be used for the platform workers’ CPF, work injury compensations, and other welfare programmes. The revised fee will also go towards facilitating platform maintenance and service improvements.
Foodpanda Increasing Platform Fee to $0.60
From 1 January 2025 onwards, food delivery platform foodpanda will also increase its platform fee by $0.20. The revised platform fee is $0.60 per order.
Foodpanda shared that the fee increase was so that it could cope with the additional costs brought about by the implementation of the Platform Workers Act, as well as to enhance its platform workers’ long-term welfare accordingly.
Gojek Increasing Platform Fee to Between $0.90 and $1.50
Gojek will also be revising its platform fee upwards from 1 January 2025 onwards. The platform fee will be increased by $0.30 to $0.50.
This means that the new platform fee you might be paying next year for your Gojek rides could range from $0.90 to $1.50 per trip.
Huh? So will I be paying $0.90 or $1.50? How to count sia?
According to Gojek, the applicable platform fee will be calculated based on several factors. These factors include distance travelled and duration.
This range system is designed to “ensure prices remain fair and competitive for both customers and driver-partners.”
Gojek will also be extending their driver fees (yes, the same kind as Grab’s, as we mentioned earlier) until 31 March 2025. Currently, their driver fee sits at $0.50 for trips below 10 km and $0.80 for trips more than 10 km.
Gojek will also retain its 10% service fee so that its drivers can earn more income.
ComfortDelGro Increasing Platform Fee to Between $1 and $1.20
Next, moving to the blue ride-hailing app — ComfortDelGro.
From 1 January 2025 onwards, if you book a taxi or PHV through CDG Zig, DBS PayLah! or Kris+, you’ll be charged a revised platform fee of between $1 and $1.20 per trip.
In other words, the platform fee has been raised by between $0.30 to $0.50.
You’ll notice that similar to Gojek, the revised platform fee for ComfortDelGroalso has a range — so how much exactly will you be paying? Well, just like Gojek, the platform fee that you will ultimately be charged depends on the distance travelled and travel time.
If you’re worried about whether the platform fee will apply to bookings made under Dial-A-Cab or street hails, fret not. There are certain services offered by ComfortDelGro that the platform fee does not apply to.
“The platform fee does not apply to the Pay for Street Hail feature, Bus Ride Chartering services, On-Demand Bus services, Public Shuttle Bus services, Travel Insurance, or Deals on the CDG Zig App. It is not applicable to bookings made through Dial-A-Cab (6552 1111), SMS-A-Cab (71222), or street-hail trips,” ComfortDelGro’s website states.
The upwards adjustment of ComfortDelGro’s platform fees will be used for “enhanced protection and welfare initiatives that are part of the new Platform Workers Bill”.
Tada Increasing Platform Fee to Between $1.05 and $1.25
Tada will similarly be increasing its platform fee from 1 January 2025 onwards.
Its platform fee will be increased by $0.50. The new platform fee will range between $1.05 and $1.25 per trip, before GST.
Tada will also extend the driver fee until 30 June 2025. Currently, the driver fee ranges from $0.50 to $0.80, and will be credited entirely to drivers to offset their operating costs.
“These measures provide greater financial security for our driver-partners and demonstrate our commitment to being a responsible and progressive platform operator,” Tada shared.
If by now, you’re confused by all the numbers already, don’t worry, and don’t say Goody Feed buey brother lah — here’s a table summarising all the increased fees across the platforms we covered above:
