Lo, and behold. Our tech giant is coming back strong with its fight with Apple and Samsung.
If you’ve been living in a cave, here’s something new to you: Singtel is bringing in the latest Google phone, the Google Pixel 2 XL, and people, including one in the office, have been going gaga over it.
It’s a Google phone, and it’s officially in Singapore leh.
Still not convinced? Here, four reasons why that is making so much noise in the office.
Picture Perfect Memories
Google’s second-generation smartphone has climbed its way to the top of the competition with an “unprecedented score” of 98, according to ratings by independent camera experts DxOMark.
It topped the scores in most of the traditional and video categories, pushing it ahead of the iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Now, that’s something worth putting our hands together for.
This is all due to Google’s “computational photography and machine learning capabilities”, claimed by Mr. Mario Queiroz, vice president and general manager of Google.
World Access Through Its Lens
With Google lens, you now have the world at your finger tips. At the museum and curious to know what the artwork’s about?
Simply capture it through Google lens and information appears in a couple of seconds on your Google Pixel 2. It works even with flowers on the streets!
Talking about photo googling.
Wireless With Pixel Buds
It was designed to complement Google Assistant, allowing users to play music, call or get directions without having to pull out their phones.
It can also go “eyes free” by reading out incoming notifications or messages, when necessary, according to Mr Adam Champy, product manager for Google Pixel Buds.
Go SIM-FREE
Yup, that’s that. Simply power up your Pixel 2 to begin setup. When you’re prompted to insert a SIM card, just tap the button for SIM-free setup.
But just to give you a heads up, Pixel 2’s eSIM capability is only limited to Project Fi subscribers in the US. It won’t come to Singapore yet.
Hmm. So I guess we’re stuck with using the SIM function when the phone launches on 15 November?
Yes, the date is out. So us the price.
For S$27.90 a month on the lowest tier price plan, the 64GB Pixel 2 XL model will cost S$1,098.
On the highest tier price plan at S$239 a month, subscribers don’t have to pay any upfront costs.
But seriously, $239 for a monthly phone bill is a little too over the top?
But if you think that’s fine, go ahead with the pre-registration for the smartphone on Singtel’s website.
In the meantime, I’ll stay loyal to Apple because I wouldn’t want to get a screen burn-in like this.
Recently, there has been rumours on some “burn-in” on the screen of the new Google Pixel 2 XL. Nevertheless, Google is “investigating” the allegations.
I told my colleague about this issue, and he, being a Google fanboy, has this to say: “Google will fix it. It’s Google leh. Not your Apple.”
The battle between Android and iOS in the office is pretty real.
