Case has just released its latest report, and it’s revealed that in 2021, complaints against renovation contractors spiked by 50%. Out of these complaints, half are attributed to “unsatisfactory workmanship” and postponed projects.

According to the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), the industry saw 1,300 complaints—up from 869 in 2020.

Before we start insinuating anything about the industry, the context is that there has been a prolonged shortage of manpower and raw materials that is caused by COVID-19 border restrictions, as well as excessive demand for home renovations.

But…this industry doesn’t take the top spot.

Beauty Industry Takes The Top Spot In Complaints

It seems like COVID-19 has not stopped us from consuming beauty products and services.

The beauty industry has seen itself accounting for almost one in ten complaints received in 2021.

Unsurprisingly, 25% of these are caused by pressure sales tactics and misleading claims made by spas and beauty salons. Package, anyone?

CASE has since referred three beauty salons to the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) for their unfair practices. As a refresher, there were instances of alleged hard-selling by Nail Palace, which, as the name suggests, is a nail salon. One woman spent $11,000 as a result.

Pre-Pandemic Levels

However, not all has been bad. According to the consumer complaint statistics released on Monday (31 Jan) by CASE, complaints against some industries have dropped.

CASE has reckoned that these are “early signs the consumer purchasing behaviour in Singapore have stabilised to pre-pandemic levels.”

These are the aforementioned industries:

  • Travel
  • Medical
  • Medical consumables
  • Telecommunications

Optimistically, many industries have improved if we consider the 15.3% decrease in total complaints made in 2021, compared to 2020.

CASE has done its part by assisting with 2,069 cases of the 15,515 complaints it received in 2021, which amounts to about 13% of the complaints. CASE mentioned that the other 13,446 cases did not require help—these issues were resolved between the consumers and the businesses.

The president of CASE, Melvin Yong, mentioned that “complaints against the beauty and renovation contractor industries remain a concern, and CASE will continue to engage the Government and industry stakeholders to strengthen consumer safeguards and stamp out unfair practices in a timely manner.”
