If it’s 2028 now, we’ll remember 2018 as the year with two of the most viral videos in the history of Singapore.
The cutest foreign worker in Singapore…
…and the funniest girl in Singapore.
The former has disappeared from the Internet, and the latter has been everywhere on the Internet. She even signed a two-year contract with Mark Lee’s company, riding on the overnight fame like a boss.
But despite the online success, she’s still doing what she does best: peddling stuff online with her usual Singlish jokes that has been a hit with Singaporeans.
However, in her latest video, she’s not trying to sell anything, but instead recommending something.
Paid advertorial? Maybe yes, maybe no, but that’s not what this article’s all about, though someone did comment about it.
Instead, it’s about her joke.
Recommending a Shampoo
So, S-Hook Jie was recommending a shampoo brand that promotes hair growth.
Okay, fine, except that instead of just talking about the benefits of the products (which she did), she made a joke.
In fact, she repeated the joke twice.
She said that if anyone wants to commit suicide, they can drink this shampoo instead because it tastes like “Coke” or “Pepsi”, and even added that 死也不要紧 (it doesn’t matter if you die).
Now, if you think that’s innocuous, read the comments by viewers:
In other words, it’s somewhat a repeat of the Logan Paul saga: a person trivializing about suicide and offended others.
Of course, Logan Paul’s video is worse since he showed a real corpse in his video (though some might think S-Hook Jie’s one is worse since she ‘promote’ suicide), but anyways.
You can view the video here (this snippet was posted by Facebook Page Singapore Peasant):
So, are people oversensitive or is it a joke that went too far?
What you might not know is that it’s an offence if someone really commits suicide due to her joke, as mentioned in Section 306 of the Penal Code (basically the law lah), as shown below:
306. If any person commits suicide, whoever abets the commission of such suicide shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
After all, by now you should know that even committing suicide itself is a chargeable offence.
S-Hook Jie Has Responded
Just a while ago, S-Hook Jie jas responded to the feedback on the video with this:
In case you can’t read, here’s what she has written:
DEAR ALL LOVELIES,
Greetings from SEOUL!
Thank you all for the care and concern about all the write-ups, however to be frank it didnt affect me and will not affect me.
I cannot please everybody, i am not a goddess or a celebrity! As usual some will cheer and some will hate. Some sees it as a joke, some just FREAKING HELL TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY! Those who know me eventually know me, no explanation needed or whatsoever.
I am having my holiday break now! LET ME CHILL FIRST and do not disturb my winter holiday!
Thank you all for the love! I miss all of you and will see you WHEN I AM BACK! CHILL GUYS~
In other words, she doesn’t think she needs to explain herself and just wants to enjoy her holiday.
Wah, truly an Ah Lian style seh. 天不怕,地不怕 spirit sehz~
