Everyone knows that when you encounter an emergency, the first thing you should do is to call for help.
But what many people do not know is that there is a number for non-emergency situation that we can call.
Because many of us were ‘brainwashed’ with 999 and 995 since young, these numbers are the first thing to come into the minds of many.
Interestingly, there’s quite a variation between the definitions of ’emergency’.
Most emergency situations that we know of would be situations like stroke and heart attack.
While some take their diarrhoea way too seriously and get a tad bit too kanchiong, hence classifying it under the same category.
Here’s the proper classification of the commonly seen situations:
Just last year, 6.3% of the calls received by Singapore Civil Defence Force were non-emergencies and 4.3% were false alarm.
In numbers, that’s 11,154 and 7,644 calls respectively.
Nothing much, maybe just 52 unnecessary calls per day.
Jokes aside, the SCDF team would like the public to avoid making non-emergency calls to them.
If you have a stomachache, constipation, diarrhoea or a rash, visit a doctor or call 1777 for a non-emergency ambulance.
After advising the public against calling 995 for non-emergency cases in June, SCDF made a short cartoon clip to re-emphasise on the importance of doing so and uploaded it to their Facebook page.
Are you having a stomachache? Need to go to the toilet urgently? You could be having a case of diarrhoea. But don't worry that's not an emergency. #995ForEmergenciesOnly

In the video, a man was having a diarrhoea and called SCDF, claiming that it was an emergency.
The officer on the other end of the line had a don’t-know-what-to-do face which practically shows how awkward it must be to receive calls like this every day.
If it was me, I certainly wouldn’t look forward to work if all I am gonna do is listen to people talk about their diarrhoea every day.
