Police & HDB Respond to Incident of SDAs Kicking a Pregnant Woman

Last Tuesday (8 Mar), Maisurah Mohd Sanip, her husband, and her two children were just at the playground when the married couple noticed three people loitering around and taking pictures of their children.

Finding it odd, Maisurah’s husband approached one of them and asked them why they were taking pictures of their children, only for one of them to say, “nothing concerns you” and “I will delete them later” before shoving her husband and running away.

Maisurah’s husband gave chase on his bicycle while Maisurah, who was already nine months pregnant then, tried to keep up and take photographs whenever she could.

The couple would later discover that these three individuals were supposedly Safe Distancing Ambassadors (SDAs), but the fact that they ran away immediately after being questioned is highly dubious.

Worst still, Ms Mai was already nine months pregnant then, but one of the men allegedly pushed her onto the road and caused her to fall to ground, before kicking her in the head while she was trying to clamber back to her feet.

This incident took place at around 6pm, near Block 539 Woodlands Avenue 1.

HDB’s Response

Since the police investigations are still underway, the Housing and Development Board has refrained from commenting too much.

HDB merely confirmed that there was indeed a conflict between its SDAs who were working in Woodlands, and stated that it’s necessary for the SDAs to carry around their passes in order to identify themselves.

On their Tuesday Facebook post, it wrote, “On 8 March, three of our SDAs were on patrol and taking some pictures for reporting purposes when they encountered two members of the public.”

HDB also urges the public from speculating about the case until the results are out.

Nevertheless, the post does confirm that there were SDAs who were out on duty, but it doesn’t confirm or deny if the three SDAs photographed by Maisurah are the ones who were dispatched.

More Details about the Case

According to The Straits Times, both sides have filed their versions of the events of that day.

To appeal for any possible witnesses who might have been in their vicinity at that time, Maisurah took to Facebook on 16 March, and narrated the events that occurred.

From her account, it appears that the chase stretched over a few blocks, since the playground was near Block 539, but from the photographs taken of the “SDAs” and the roadside, much of the physical altercation happened near Block 536A.

After Maisurah was kicked by the man—whom she termed as SDA #3—a car apparently honked at them as it was driving by.

Her husband immediately rushed over to help her and held down the man that kicked her as they were waiting for the police.

Meanwhile, the other two individuals ran away.

When the police arrived ten minutes later, their statements were taken and Maisurah’s slightly swollen and bruised face was photographed as evidence.

Fortunately for Maisurah, her baby was still reportedly healthy after a visit to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in the evening, despite the violence that was inflicted on her.

When she fell down, she had broken her fall with her hands for the most part.

Some Points of Suspicion to Raise

Given the events that have transpired, there are a few crucial questions to ask, which Maisurah had already brought up in her Facebook post:

  1. Why didn’t the “SDAs” identify themselves when they were asked?
  2. Why did they run away afterwards and act violently against members of the public?
  3.  Are they even real Safe Distancing Ambassadors?

Judging from the SDA Pass that Maisurah found in the grass patch later, the authenticity of the pass really needs to be questioned, because it looks like a shoddy imitation.

To further prove my point, here’s a side-by-side comparison of the real SDA pass provided by the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment, and the “card” that Maisurah found.

Real SDA Passes are actual plastic cards, whereas the other “card” is obviously a laminated paper.

Secondly, while it’s difficult to find any information about what the back of SDA Passes are supposed to look like, according to a commenter on Facebook who worked as a social distancing ambassador during the circuit breaker period, the pass should have the HDB stamp and signature, alongside the person’s image, identification number, and date of expiry.

The need to indicate such information is because the SDA passes essentially function as search warrants to allow SDAs to check the area with authorised permission.

Moreover, it should be noted that the image on the card matches none of the three “SDAs” involved, especially when Maisurah alleges that it belongs to SDA #3.

I don’t see the resemblance at all, no matter how hard I squint at the photos.

And as another Goody Feed writer has pointed out, none of them were wearing the iconic red armbands or shirts that are typically associated with SDAs.

Therefore, the likelihood of the trio being real “Safe Distancing Ambassadors” is quite low.

Presently, the police said that investigations into this case are still ongoing.

However, Maisurah also revealed in the Facebook post that hasn’t received any updates from any sources, why is why she hopes to find more witnesses to strengthen her case.

But seriously speaking, why were the trio taking those pictures?
