Fact is much, much stranger than fiction.
Did you know that the current president of Ukraine was a comedic actor, most famous for playing a satire about a clueless teacher elected as president?
The comedy, Servant of the People, follows the chronicles of a teacher that went viral after a rant about government corruption propels him to the heights of internet fame.
Behind his back, his students organise a political campaign for him, and he finds himself suddenly voted into office, where, after momentary confusion, he weeds out corruption, fights against oligarchs, and serves as president. Sound familiar?
Laughter is the Best Politician
Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s comedy was an immediate hit, gaining traction through its 2015 Season 1 and then its 2017 Season 2, before becoming the very cornerstone of Zelenskiy’s presidential campaign in 2019.
Ukrainian politics has also eerily converged to a very large extent with Servant of the People—in 2018, a political party with the same name as the one in the show was registered in Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice.
And of course, after an overwhelmingly successful political campaign where he gained a landslide victory of over 70% of votes, Zelenskiy was thrust not only into actual presidency but also the largest European geo-political conflict since the Second World War.
It almost seems like a movie within a movie.

Zelenskiy’s Approach
After the Ukrainian conflict began, Zelenskiy has proved to be responding well to the crisis.
Vowing to stay behind and fight even as the US offered to evacuate him, his iconic comment “the fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” as well as his sustained resolve to stand his ground have propelled his presidential approval ratings three times what they were in December, up to 91%.
Zelenskiy has also been hailed “Captain Ukraine”, a hero, and a “profile in courage”, among other heaping praise.
Hence, as general perception of Zelensky improves and the international attention on the Ukraine conflict increases, the viewer demand for his comedy show has peaked.
Netflix has responded to the demand and brought back the show, which was last on Netflix from 2017-2021, and it is currently on Netflix Singapore as well.
Take a look if you want to see the show that was so good and so funny, it elected an actual president.
So, who’s gonna make a show about me winning Toto?
