When other people look at a dog, they think mmm, it looks so darn tasty I could bite its ear off. 

Can we really say one is more moral than the other?

Dog: OF COURSE, MAN.

Well, while the moral issue of eating dogs may be debatable, what isn’t is the fact that banning its consumption could prevent the emergence of a new disease.

Shenzhen, a city in China, is preparing to ban the consumption of dogs and cats in a bid to end the wildlife trade that scientists suspect led to the coronavirus outbreak.

According to CNA, the proposed regulations from the city government list nine meats that are permitted for consumption, including pork, chicken, beef and rabbit, as well as fish and seafood.

Oh. Rabbits can still be eaten.

As you may have read, scientists believe that the COVID-19 virus passed to humans from animals. Some of the earliest infections were found in people who had exposure to a wildlife market in Hubei’s provincial capital Wuhan, where bats, snakes, civets, and other animals were sold.

That’s why people started calling for a ban on these meats, to prevent another disease from spreading.

“Banning the consumption of wild animals is a common practice in developed countries and is a universal requirement of modern civilisation,” the notice said.

The document also recognised dogs and cats’ status as pets and would ban their consumption. The consumption of snakes, turtles, and frogs will also be banned, despite being popular dishes in China’s south.

Aside from netizens, animal welfare advocates are pleased with the move.

A ban on eating dog and cat meat in Shenzhen would be “extremely welcome,” said Peter Li, China policy expert for Humane Society International, an animal welfare group.

“Although the trade in Shenzhen is fairly small compared with the rest of province, Shenzhen is still a huge city and is larger than Wuhan, so this would be very significant and could even have a domino effect with other cities following.”

The other permitted meats are lamb, donkey, ducks, geese, and pigeon.

The proposal noted there are more than 2,000 species of protected wildlife in China.

Follows Nationwide Ban

This move by the Shenzhen authorities follows the nationwide ban on the trade and consumption of wild animals by the Chinese central government, after an initial suspension in January.

And the authorities aren’t taking this issue lightly.

Those caught eating protected animals would be fined up to 20,000 yuan (US$2,850) and up to 2,000 yuan for non-protected animals, according to the draft. Shops serving protected meat face fines of up to 50,000 yuan.

So, if you’re a cat or dog in China, cheer up, people will stop eating you.
