Vaccinated S’poreans Can Visit Parts of Australia Without Quarantine from 21 Nov

Around a week ago, some people here were alarmed by what sounded like an invasion by a large army of knights.

It turned out to be residents clacking furiously on their keyboards trying to purchase flight tickets to Australia.

This was followed by an exasperated “aiyah” that was audible all over the country after they discovered that the travel arrangement was only for Australian citizens, PRs, and their families.

Most of us thought that Australia would only open up to tourists in 2045, but it’s going to be much, much sooner than that.

Vaccinated S’poreans Can Visit Parts of Australia Without Quarantine from 21 Nov

Dust your passports, look for your luggage bags, and start creating your travel itinerary, because fully vaccinated travellers from Singapore will be able to travel to Australia soon!

The country plans to reopen its borders to vaccinated Singapore travellers from 21 Nov, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced yesterday (31 Oct).

The two-way quarantine-free travel arrangement will initially apply to selected Australian states including New South Wales and Victoria. Singapore is only the second country Australia is opening its borders to, after New Zealand.

This means that students here can finally resume their studies there, families can finally reunite, and tourists can have a much-needed vacation down under.

Earlier this week, Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAS) announced that Australia would be added to our vaccinated travel lane (VTL) scheme from 8 Nov (for Australian citizens).

Requirements

The best thing about this VTL scheme is that there’s no need to quarantine once your reach your destination.

Australian travellers entering Singapore will have to take two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests – one before departure and another on arrival at Changi Airport – and enter Singapore via designated flights.

It’s unclear how many tests Singaporeans will have to take when travelling to Australia, as testing requirements for countries under the VTL scheme vary.

Travellers must have remained in one or more of the VTL countries in the last 14 days before departure, of course.

Countries under VTL Scheme

The VTL scheme was first launched with Germany and Brunei, though Brunei has not reopened its doors to tourists yet.

The scheme was then expanded to Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Along with Australia, VTL services will commence with Switzerland on 8 Nov, as well as for South Korea from 15 Nov.

That’s right folks, we’ve waited a long, long, time for it, but leisure travel is finally back.
