S’poreans Are Heading to JB to Buy Lots of Mooncakes, With 1 Buying 100 Boxes at 1 Go

If there’s one thing that will probably never stop being trendy for Singaporeans, it’s crossing the Causeway to buy things for a fraction of the cost as compared to prices in Singapore.

And it seems like it is no different for Singaporeans’ preparations for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, which will take place on 10 September this year.

As part of the traditions that most of us are familiar with, mooncakes are a must-have in almost every single family during the festive period.

However, mooncakes, which range from traditional ones with lotus paste and salted egg yolk fillings to more modern snow skin ones, can cost quite a fortune, especially with rising food costs and new innovative flavours popping up on the market every so often.

And with the start of the one-week-long September school holidays in both Singapore and Malaysia, it’s no surprise that many Singaporeans have opted to travel to Malaysia in search of cheaper mooncakes, especially after being unable to do so for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many Singapore Customers; Sales Have Been Doubled

If you’re wondering just how much Singaporeans have contributed to the mooncake sales in Malaysia, we’ve contributed a lot.

When speaking to China Press, mooncake salespeople working at mooncake stores in a Johor Bahru shopping centre claimed that there have been more consumers purchasing mooncakes this year.

The sales of mooncakes have even doubled when compared to the sales from the past two years, and many people have been seen walking around City Square Mall in Johor Bahru carrying and buying mooncakes as well.

According to the salespeople, Malaysian mooncakes are in such high demand due to their unique taste and price, as a box of mooncakes in Malaysia costs around half or one-third as much as it would in Singapore.

And although most customers of these stalls are Singaporean, there were some Malaysian customers in the area as well.

They explained to China Press that they work in Singapore, and that they are helping their colleagues buy the mooncakes in Malaysia before they return to their jobs in Singapore.

Some Stores Have Run Out of Stock

Yup, Singaporeans have really bought a lot of mooncakes from Malaysia this year.

The manager of a mooncake store in City Square Mall in Johor Bahru told China Press that she encountered a Singaporean customer who bought 100 boxes of mooncakes in one go this year.

She also echoed similar sentiments as the salespeople, claiming that this year’s sales have been “the best” thus far.

Some stores have minimal stocks left, while others have completely run out of stock.

She believes that mooncakes have been selling like hot cakes (ha!) recently due to the recent reopening of the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia, which has prompted many Singaporeans to purchase mooncakes in Malaysia after not being able to do so for two years.

She then added that her store is likely to run out of mooncakes over the next few days as well, meaning that they will have to request more mooncakes from the head branch.
