If you’ve slept soundly this early morning, then you won’t have known that somewhere out there, a number of people in Singapore are cursing and swearing.
No, it’s not because there’s yet another MRT breakdown. After all, we’re talking about somewhere between 2:15 a.m. to 2:55 a.m.
(At least that’s what they said)
According to The Straits Times, some Singtel users weren’t able to access the Internet between that period, and it was due to a “planned maintenance” that typically took 15 minutes.
However, this planned maintenance, which was not announced anywhere publicly (at least not to me: I’m using a Singtel line), ballooned to almost 40 minutes, though some social media users have claimed that it’s way longer than that.
A Facebook user, however, did mention about a planned maintenance, but it was for the morning of 25 August 2017 and for fibre service instead.
Because here’s the kicker: this “disruption”, if you would like to call it, affected 4G connection as well.
Now, imagine that you’re in a remote part of Singapore at 2:30 a.m. and need to Uber back home. It’s the seventh month, and the last thing on your mind is your connection, but then you realized your app isn’t working because there’s no connection.
You see, nowadays, even transportation requires an Internet connection. Who would have thought of that two years ago?
And also, people are losing money even when the disruption is two in the morning.
With our growing reliance on the Internet, I guess a disruption isn’t just a matter of whether you can send an email or WhatsApp a friend: it’s going to disrupt your life so much, MRT disruptions seem minor. #justsaying
And just in case you want to read all the angry comments, most of them were posted on this video. Poor Team Singapore.
At least now, more people know more about the SEA Games. #justsaying
