When Malaysia first closed its borders, Singaporeans went crazy because they didn’t know the border closure affects supply lines.
Thankfully, it didn’t but according to the CNB, daily necessities aren’t the only things making its way into Singapore during the shutdown, and even now.
Drugs are also coming in, in many creative ways.
CNB Shows How Creative People Smuggle Their Drugs, Including Smuggling Via a Drone
On 17 Nov 2020, Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) revealed how drugs were being brought into our sunny island despite the closure of borders.
One method is to hide the drugs within fruits sent into Singapore.
Two Singaporeans aged 29 and 48 were caught by CNB officers along River Valley Road for smuggling drugs worth S$124,000 within papaya.
Another way is to use a drone.
Officers have arrested suspects who allegedly flew a drone with drugs from Malaysia into Singapore.
$2 Million Worth Of Drugs
Earlier in November, it was reported that CNB seized 14.1kg worth of heroin in a raid, said to be their largest haul in 9 years.
A host of other drugs were seized in the raids, including:
- 2.9kg of “ice”, or methamphetamine
- 7.6kg of cannabis
- 323g of ecstasy fragments
- 28 ecstasy tablets
- 1,008 Erimin-5 tablets
In total, the drugs seized amounted to nearly $2 million. $12,629 in cash was also found in the raid.
The last time CNB seized such a large amount of heroin was in 2001, when they found a record 14.9kg of heroin in a single operation.
Trafficking more than 15g of heroin carries the death penalty in Singapore.
Three men and two women, aged between 29 and 55, were arrested.
That’s not all, though.
Dangerous Weapons Found
On 17 Nov 2020, it was reported that another 5 suspected drug offenders were arrested in various raids across the island.
One of the raids was carried out at a location near a hotel in the Balestier Road area on 16 Nov.
In the raid, officers found a packet containing about 1g of Ice and a bottle of liquid suspected to contain gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
But that wasn’t the most interesting thing they found.
Officers also recovered a Karambit knife from the scene, and later found two watermelon knives, a parang, and a baseball bat, as well as more drugs when they searched his vehicle.
Was this man moonlighting as a ninja or something?
For the unacquainted, the Karambit knife is a small Indonesian curved knife resembling a claw.
And a watermelon knife is, well, a knife to cut watermelons.
Though I’m guessing fresh fruit wasn’t what this man had in mind.
Prevented Many Drugs From “Reaching The Ground”
According to the spokesperson for CNB, the agency has managed to keep “a sizeable amount of drugs from reaching the ground” and successfully disrupted creative drug supply lines over the past months.
It was added that the anti-drug agency will continue to uphold its duty and work “swiftly” to “dismantle” drug syndicates.
“We will keep up our enforcement efforts and the pressure on drug traffickers and syndicates.”
