Some Acuvue Contact Lenses Recalled After Foreign Particles Found In Products Overseas

When I was 10, my teacher told us about the time she almost went blind because of her contact lenses.

She said that she had put on a pair of contact lens which had a cut that wasn’t visible to the human eye. It had caused her eyes to turn red and tear up.

Since then, I have always had a fear of contact lens. And this piece of news doesn’t really make it any better.

Acuvue has recently come forward to say that there were some foreign particles found in the products overseas which could potentially scratch your eyeballs.

Good thing they are recalling the products.

Foreign Particles Found In Contact Lens Overseas

Acuvue contact lenses for astigmatism were found to may have been contaminated with particles which could cause irritation, redness, and damage to the surface of your eyes in the UK.

Contact lens wearers in the UK have since been urged to check their products.

There have been no reports of serious adverse events to date.

Acuvue Recalls Contact Lenses In Singapore

While there have been no such reports in Singapore, they are playing it safe.

According to The Straits Times, the company will be doing a voluntary recall of six batches of One-day Acuvue Moist for astigmatism.

This is to ensure that customers do not continue using the affected batches.

Good call, Acuvue!

Lot Numbers Of Affected Batches

The number of people affected is small since only 272 boxes were distributed in Singapore.

You can check if your contact lenses are affected by checking for the lot numbers which can be found on the outer box of a 30-pack carton.

Under the first barcode on the left of the back face, the lot number is the first 7 numbers and/or letters written next to “LOT”.

It can also be found on the blister package.

The first 7 digits of the numbers written at the bottom next to “LOT” on the foil are the numbers to look out for.

The affected LOT numbers are:

  • 3957490101
  • 3957490112
  • 3957500104
  • 3957500111
  • 3957500112
  • 3957510102

Johnson & Johnson had said that the lenses are no longer for sale in optical stores but those who have bought them before the recall should return the product as soon as possible.

Health Sciences Authority (HSA) Notified

Those who have experienced discomfort in their eyes (pain or redness) while using the lenses are advised to seek medical advice.

Johnson & Johnson has also notified the HSA on the recall and they sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused.

“We remain fully committed to serving our customers with safe and effective products”

Not The First Time

In 2017, Acuvue lenses were recalled because brush bristles were found between the blister package and foil.

Close to 1,000 boxes were recalled back then.

Well, I guess Acuvue did a good job by informing consumers of the affected products before people were affected.

And even though this incident makes me a little more scared of contact lenses, I have to say that with their honesty and voluntary recall, it does make me trust them more.
