Alcohol, in many ways, is like fire.
For one, it’s a pretty good servant. If used appropriately, it could help you clinch a deal, or muster enough bravado to ask that girl out.
For two, it’s a bad boy. Alcohol could get you drunk, while fires can trigger small explosions that will make your face look like it’s been through a charcoal facial.
Similarity? They both make you look stupid.
Heck, it even boosts the intensity of fires if added, so they are definitely compatible with each other.
But like fire, it could also be dangerous.
Very dangerous.
And Wang Yaodong’s friends were forced to learn it.
The hard way.
Wang Yaodong, 19, had been chilling at the bar with his friends and the bar owner approached them for a challenge: if one of them could finish six cocktails within three minutes, the drinks would be for free. Should they be unable to meet the timing, they would have to pay 168 yuan (S$35) for the drinks.
Wang took it up and chugged one litre worth of alcohol straight down.
Since the challenge’s complete, everyone except the owner should be happy, right?
Wrong.
Wang soon lost consciousness after that. Worried, his friends attempted to induce vomit out of him so that his body would be purged of alcohol, but he didn’t respond. Before they knew it, his lips had turned a distinct purple, and his pulse was really weak.
After a long contemplation on whether to call for an ambulance or not, the bar owner stepped up to the plate and drove all of them to the hospital.
By then 40 minutes had lapsed since he fainted.
And that ultimately proved to be the critical factor.
By the time Wang reached the hospital’s emergency department, he had stopped breathing entirely, and his pulse totally stopped.
Doctors commenced a resuscitation procedure, and just when all hope was lost, they managed to revive him.
You can only imagine how happy Wang’s friends were.
And then they were swiftly slapped in the face right the day after. Wang’s condition had worsened, and he eventually passed to acute alcohol poisoning.
He doesn’t drink much
According to Wang’s sister, he rarely consumes alcohol, and even during Chinese New Year celebrations at home, only took one or two drinks. In fact, she saw first-hand how flushed he became after just one or two beers during a KTV outing.
Alcohol poisoning
According to Mayo Clinic, alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency that needs instant treatment.
It is regularly incited by binge drinking, an act in which someone consumes a large amount of alcohol within a short period of time.
This causes alcohol levels to spike in the body, and as a result lead to adverse effects in a person’s breathing, body temperature and gag reflex. In more serious cases, coma and death could apply.
How do you qualify for alcohol poisoning?
A man who downs more than five drinks within two hours, or a woman who takes more than four drinks within two hours, is at risk of alcohol poisoning.
History repeats itself
In 2016, a bridesmaid in China had been forced to drink baijiu, which is a drink that contains between 40 and 60 percent of alcohol. She ended up choking on her vomit and actually passed away.
And no, it doesn’t stay exclusive to China. In 2015, a young bar hostess in Singapore consumed 18 glasses of hard liquor in an attempt to earn a tip from a customer. She eventually passed due to alcohol poisoning.
Thoughts
Netizens were divided on who to hold responsible for Wang’s death.
Some attributed it to the pressure of the country’s drinking culture, while some said that Wang should have turned it down, or perhaps let his friends take it, seeing how he wasn’t exactly an avid drinker.
But is that really the important thing here?
The guy’s dead, and no amount of blaming would bring him back to life.
There’s only a lesson here to be learnt: drink responsibly.
Or as the elders like to preach, “Can drink how much then drink how much. Don’t geh kiang and down everything.”
