Chinese New Year is finally here!
Even if you’re one who doesn’t carry out all the traditional practices, like all the house-visiting and reunion dinners, there’s bound to be something that you’ll do each CNY.
Personally, buying new clothes is one.
I can’t really point a reason to it, but I guess you can summarise everything into one word: lazy.
So every CNY, I would get my lazy ass up and get some decent clothing that’ll last me through the year.
Talking about clothing, there are a few well-known brands that are every Singaporean’s go-to.
Sadly, just as we are finally stepping into the CNY holidays, two clothing brands have announced their upcoming departure from our shores.
And this time around, it’s very unlikely they’ll be pulling a gongcha on us.
According to Channel NewsAsia, American clothing brands Gap and Banana Republic are shutting down their outlets in Singapore.
This news was announced by retail and lifestyle group FJ Benjamin, which manages the stores here.
“FJ Benjamin is closing down its remaining two Banana Republic and three Gap stores in Singapore by the end of this month following a decision not to renew the franchise which expires on Feb 28,” a spokesman said.
Gap first mentioned about the closure on Tuesday (Feb 13) with a Facebook post.
Gap is offering up to 70% off storewide + 30% off when you buy minimum 3 items at their stores in VivoCity, Suntec City and United Square.
Banana Republic also mentioned on their Facebook page, saying that there were “just 6 days left till we say our final goodbye”.
We are saying goodbye! Grab your favourites now and enjoy 80% off storewide, plus 20% off when you buy 5 items or 10%…
Posted by Banana Republic on Wednesday, 7 February 2018
Banana Republic is offering 80% off storewide + 20% off when you buy 5 items at their store in The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
There are 2,000 Gap and Banana Republic stores worldwide, and about 10% are closing down.
Gap CEO Art Peck said that sales downturns were “significant and acute” and mentioned “creative missteps” in its plans to keep the brands competitive.
Gap added that while brands that are faring worse will be closing down, brands who are doing well, such as Old Navy and Athleta will be opening up new stores instead.
This change is expected to drive growth for the company.
There are no exact closing dates announced yet, but since they’re not renewing after 28 Feb, so I guess you have the remaining of Feb to enjoy the sale!
Dear Gap and Banana Republic, you’ll be missed!
