You’ve probably faced this dilemma before:
Should you get the $3 carrot cake, or the larger $6 portion?
Stumped, you probably hogged the queue, determined to think it through.
“How should I go about this…?” you whispered to yourself, even as the uncle openly gave you the stink eye. “How…?”
At that juncture, your eyes light up. You’ve just thought of something.
The uncle forcibly cracks a smile. “Ah boy ah, thought of what to eat already?”
But you didn’t hear what he said, because you’ve just thought of something. Something sinister.
Is the $6 portion really… $6?
How do you determine whether it was?
What if the stall uncle was low-key trying to scam you? You looked at his crooked smile and crooked teeth. Questionable.
What about that cute stall assistant? She’s been staring at you for a good long while. Was she trying to tell whether you’re blur enough to be fooled?
Well, worry no more, because Stirr has resolved that life-threatening issue for once and for all.
How? It’s simple really.
Math.
What they did was basically buy 2 plates of the same hawker fare, and compare the combined weight to a single plate that’s double the cost.
Is it really worth your $6? Let’s find out.
Hawker food: Are small plates more worth it than big plates?
Upsize experiment: Hawker edition. Do you get more food with two $4 plates of char kway teow or one $8 plate?

Stirr got the ball rolling with the delectable Char Kway Teow.
Wait, is my mathematical brain failing me? Shouldn’t the $8 portion be heavier or something?
Omg, I’m totally mindblown. There’s a 10.2% difference in terms of portions!
Alright, maybe it’s just the Char Kuay Teow. Let’s check out the next one:
Carrot cake.
Fat baby jesus…
I can’t believe it. Is this a conspiracy?
But I’m still unconvinced. Maybe the last one will save everything.
Fried oyster, otherwise known as Hao Jian.
Well, this changes everything.
18.7%? That’s a higher percentage than GST!
Moral of the story
Next time, don’t trust that uncle or auntie’s sweet words.
Don’t even trust that cute stall assistance’s smile.
Just opt for two small packets of $3 carrot cake, instead of that “large” $6 packet.
You will have more to eat, and you’ll have foiled their plans.
Don’t give them what they want, people!
We must rebel!

Disclaimer: Alright I get it. They don’t exactly weigh portions on a scale, so it’s probably not intentional. Nevertheless, the key message is there. Want more value for your money? Get the two small packets. Dieting? Get the large one. Maybe I’m just salty over the fact that I ordered a $6 packet of carrot cake yesterday. Dammit.
