After knowing about this, I immediately went to my boss’ office.
“Boss, remember not to buy ice-cream from McDonald’s later, if not someone might Insta-Story you ‘coz you’re so fat and everyone hates you.”
“Wait, what?”
“Just look out for someone who’s fit.”
“What’s an,..Insta-Story? Someone instantly wrote a story about my ice-cream?”
“Erm…”
“Who? Is it our competitor Baddy Feed? Did they take a good picture of me?”
“Bye, boss…”
“Hey, where’re you going? Come back in, you bas—”
It might not happen to our boss since he won’t be the one buying the ice-cream, but this really happened because one innocent lady was fat-shamed online simply for buying ice-cream from McDonald’s.
Instagram Story That Went Viral
Of course, Instagram Story isn’t supposed to get viral since they can’t be shared, but this particular story was screenshot, posted on Facebook and the rest is history.
Meet @supershah, a bodybuilder and personal trainer. From his profile image (don’t bother searching for him; read on and you’ll understand), he’s a bufflord.
With well-developed muscles from top to bottom that shine, he’s one who doesn’t skip his leg days.
But maybe he skips his brain days regularly, because one fateful day, he posted this in his Instagram Story.
It was captured by a Facebook user who then posted it online.
Suffice to say, that’s not very nice.
Backlash Came Immediately
The Facebook post has since been deleted, but the damage was done.
Soon after, he apologized on Instagram Daryl-Aidenly.
If you can’t read, here’s what he’s written:
I would like to sincerely apologise for my recent IG story post.
I was too rash and understand the insensitive statement is uncalled for and offensive. I am deeply sorry if my comment hurt or offended anyone.
As a trainer, I’m deeply committed to my duty to help people achieve their health and fitness goals and I’ll continue to do so in more appropriate ways from now.
Rash? Or Freudian slip? You decide. But read on because a netizen fished out some old posts that showed his discriminatory self.
But unlike Daryl Aiden, who has since bounced back from the dead, @supershah, who most likely isn’t feeling so super now, lost everything instead.
Instagram Account Deleted; Job Suspended
Try searching for his Instagram and you’ll come out empty-handed, because a while later, he deleted his account.
In his Instagram profile, he calls himself a “fitnessfirstsg Elite Trainer”.
A check on Fitness Fit Singapore website shows that it’ll cost $133.75 per session (1 hour) with an Elite Personal Trainer, compared to a normal Personal Trainer that’s priced at $122.35.
Soon after, Fitness First Singapore posted this without naming anyone:
Lest you can’t read it, here’s their announcement which they’ve pinned it to the top of their Facebook Page:
It has been brought to our attention that a recent post by a FF trainer on social media was found to have used insensitive statements towards a member of the public and we would like to apologise for any distress caused.
We have undertaken an internal investigation and suspended his duties till further notice. He has since publicly apologised for his behaviour through an Instagram post and understands the insensitivity of his comment.
We pride ourselves on the culture of our training and the professionalism of our teams. We view this matter seriously and wish to assure the public that we do not agree with the comment made by our employee nor condone such behaviour.
As the fitness leaders, we strive to provide a safe, welcoming and motivating environment for anyone who wishes to pursue a healthier, fitter lifestyle, regardless of their starting point.
We sincerely regret the incident.
Well.
To add oil to the fire, a netizen dug out a post:
But of course, no one can confirm whether Shah Cutler is @supershah, but given that his name in Instagram is Shah Cutler, the chances are high.
I mean, how many Shah Cutlers are there in Singapore, or even in the world?
Bodybuilder has 2,554 Followers
What’s interesting is that @supershah has only 2.5K followers, which means the chances of his antics to go viral aren’t high.
But seriously, all it takes is one person to get offended and the world could come for you.
So the lesson here is simple: nothing is private on the Internet. If you want to say anything insensitive online, be prepared for the consequences.
Even if you’ve got just one follower.
If not, just stay off the Internet.
