As an individual, we tend to put a lot of trust on people we love, be it parents, siblings or our other half, that they wouldn’t commit any act that would do any harm to us.
However, this trust that we have towards people do, unfortunately, get misused from time to time.
And this case is just one great example of how someone allowed his own desire to get the better of him and betray the faith and respect his daughter had for him.
Raped His Daughter Twice
A 52-year-old Singaporean man was on trial on Tuesday, 17 September 2019, for raping and assaulting his 27-year-old biological daughter three years ago.
The incident was reported to have happened in their flat, in the early hours of 27 March 2016.
Both parties cannot be named due to gag orders issued by the court so as to protect the victim.
The two parties were said to be drinking together when the victim fell asleep. She then woke up when she felt someone touching her over her shorts.
Knifepoint Her To Perform Sex Act
When she opened her eyes, she saw her father completely naked and touching her.
He then placed the penknife on her neck, threatening her to keep her volume down and forcing her to remove her clothing and perform sexual acts on him.
According to TODAYonline, the man had said:
“Don’t shout, I’ll slash you,”
“Take out your clothing, otherwise I will use the knife to cut you till you die,” and
“Blow for me, you want to do now or I will cut your throat”.
Biological daughter or not, no one deserves such humiliation and hurt.
The man, reportedly, raped the victim twice that night despite her pleas to let her go. He also punched and strangled her when she tried to wrestle him.
Said That He Was Sorry
The victim’s parents were purportedly divorced but were still living in the same flat.
At the time of the offence, the victim was alone at home with her father as her mother had gone over to stay with her brother.
After the incident, the victim managed to get her phone back from her father and left the house on the pretext of buying drinks, where she called for help.
The unnamed person then picked her up and brought her to Jurong Police Division headquarters where she lodged a police report.
The father was arrested later at night. He also called the victim numerous times and sent her nine messages stating that he was sorry.
A cut was found on the neck of the victim and the accused’s DNA matched the secretion on the victim’s shorts, according to an analyst from the Health Science Authority.
Suffering From PSTD
The victim was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder with co-morbid depressive symptoms at Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Yiwen told the court, “The victim was made to suffer indignities, humiliation, and pain at the hands of the man she loved and called “appa” (which means dad), as the accused committed the acts in the charges, callously ignoring her pleas to let her go.”
The prosecution will also be presenting closed-circuit television and police camera footage from the areas at the flat and walkway which illustrates the victim’s state of distress after the sexual assault.
The trial will continue for the rest of the week and if convicted, the man faces up to 20 years of jail.
The accused cannot be caned by law despite a mandatory minimum of 12 strokes of the cane for the offence as he is above 50 years old.
Not The First Case In Singapore
In May this year, a man was jailed 29 years for touching his daughter sexually when she was 5 years old and started having sex with her at 11 until she was 16 years old.
In 2018, a technician was also sentenced to 26 years of imprisonment for raping his daughter eight times over the span of two months.
Despite such things being morally wrong, unfortunate events like this still happen.
While the accused will be jailed for eight to 20 years if convicted, the victims will be scarred for life because of how these people were unable to control their own “desire”.
So, come on, rape shouldn’t happen to anyone, regardless of gender. Keep your sexual thoughts to yourself and do not force it on someone else.
