S’pore is Ranked as World’s 2nd Most Powerful Passport—Here’s What ‘Power’ Means

According to a global ranking of the world’s passports, Singapore has the world’s second most “powerful” passport. What does it mean for us?

Second in Place

The 2017 Passport Index, released on Thursday (Jan 12), placed Singapore on the same par with Sweden, right after Germany. Coming in joint-third were Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, the UK and The US. Since the 2016 results, Singapore’s ranking has improved by one spot.

Power of the Passport

The power of each country’s passport is based on three factors. Firstly, they count how many countries that a nation’s passport holders could visit without a visa, or by obtaining a visa on arrival. The two figures are then weighted against each other; in the case of a tie, the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index is used as a final comparison. Germany received a Visa-Free score of 157, compared to Singapore’s 156. A total of 199 passports worldwide were included in the index.

This grants us access to even more countries, making Singapore passport a very desirable one to have for travelling. Hence, it is important that we take good care of our own passports especially when we are overseas. (Gentle reminder!)
