A plate of chicken rice might cost you $3, but this shop sells food at only 1/3 of the price!
The Food Bank Singapore is setting up a shop, The Food Pantry, where consumable items such as canned food, biscuits, beverages, sauces and confectioneries will be sold at $1 each.
There is a catch here, though. All the items will be nearing their expiry date, with less than 2 months of shelf life left.
However, you can be assured that they will have at least one week left for you to consume. The variety of food items available are dependent on donations.
This means that the Food Pantry will be operating at zero cost with regards to food items.
However, Nichol Ng, the co-founder of The Food Bank Singapore, has emphasised that The Food Pantry is not part of a fundraising effort by a non-profit organisation. “It’s a platform for us to raise awareness on food wastage reduction and change the way consumers shop,” said Ms Ng.
The money raised will fund manpower and other business expenses. The remainder of the proceeds, if any, will go The Food Bank Singapore to cover donation operations. In a way, this also contributes to charity, we guess.
The Food Pantry is also looking into the possibility of selling “ugly” fresh goods which are otherwise perfectly edible, such as bruised fruits or vegetables with flaws.
This concept is not that new, and you can see plenty of supermarkets out there who packaged such fresh produce together and sell at a lower price.
The Food Pantry will also double up as an emergency food ration programme for TFBS’s beneficiaries. “Since The Food Pantry is open daily, it is another avenue for the underprivileged to gain access to the food for free,” says Ms Ng.
The shop space is located at Sims Avenue so if you’re near there, do visit it!
