S’poreans Joanna Dong & Olinda Cho Now Face Each Other in Sing! China

Contrary to popular beliefs, it’s not always a case of guys fighting over a girl.

Sometimes, it’s girls fighting over a guy.

In fact, they could totally go b**** mode and fight tooth and nails over him. Scary stuff, really.

Anyway, some of the guys girls fight over are pretty expected: handsome, tall guys who look like Tom Hiddleston, or pretty boys with six-pack abs who look like Kim Jungkook.

On the other hand, some are pretty dubious-looking, but still attract chicks like rice attracts Asians. You got to give it to them though; it’s either because their personality shines through like Brad Pitt’s jawline, or because they were born under the right star at the right time.

If you’re wondering why I’m rambling on about such a trivial topic, it’s because this article involves just that.

Two girls are fighting over one guy.

And the guy is Jay Chou, no less.

Can I join in?

Sing! China

If you weren’t aware, Joanna Dong and Olinda Cho are Singaporean singers who were selected as Jay Chou’s mentees on singing competition Sing! China.

And may I just say that the both of them have made Singapore very, very proud? (You too, Curley Gao and Stella Seah!)

Both singers have made it quite far too. In fact, they are two of four teammates in the contest fighting to represent their mentor, Jay Chou, in the grand final (it will be held at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium, and it will be broadcast live on 8 Oct 2017 and there won;t be free bird’s nests).

Note: Looks like you’re one popular man, eh Jay? No doubting your title as Taiwan’s Mandopop megastar!

Joanna and Olinda have been scheduled to go head-to-head in this Friday (29 Sept 2017) night’s episode, and they will each perform a duet with Taiwanese singer Harlem Yu (a mentor on the show in previous seasons).

While Olinda has opted to perform a re-arrangement of her mentor’s classic ballad, Silence; Dong chose to complement her duet partner’s style instead, by going for Yu’s retro song True Love Song.

A panel of 51 judges, and the celebrity mentors, will be there to decide the victor. The winner will then go on to compete in a solo round against the victor of the other match-up: Malaysian Janice Tan against Dabu from China, the other two members of Team Jay Chou.

Singapore’s making baby steps

Singapore is really stepping up its game in the music industry, isn’t it?

Although it’s not like we haven’t reached out to the international Mandopop market before (JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun), the numbers didn’t exactly stand in the double digits.

And now, we have more than a handful that could give other accomplished singers a run for their money!

Kudos, Singaporeans! Keep making this tiny red dot proud.

Meanwhile, good luck to the both of you, ladies!

May the best singer win!

You can catch the epic sing-off this Friday on Jia Le Channel (Singtel TV Channel 502) at 9pm, which airs the same time as China.
