It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And by that, we aren’t just talking about Christmas.
For fans of the South Korean thriller Squid Game, it’s the most wonderful time of the year also because Squid Game season two is being released.
Squid Game Season 2 Released Today
The sequel to the popular South Korean thriller, Squid Game, will be released on Netflix today (26 December). If you’ve yet to hear of the show, we only have one thing to say to you: have you been living under a rock?
Season 1 of the show was first released in 2021 and quickly became the talk of the town. Just ask anyone — even the lovely aunties and uncles at the coffee shop below your HDB have probably heard of it.
In fact, Squid Game was so popular that it became Netflix’s most-watched series. Yes, you read that right — this nine-episode thriller trumped all those other shows you swore by.
But if you didn’t already know what Squid Game was about, all you need to know is that the show follows an underground competition in South Korea recruiting players to compete in children’s games. Recruited players are usually people in debt, and the reward for the winner of the competition is, well, money.
In the new season, the main character Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, returns to find those behind Squid Game and attempts to end the unjust competition.
We won’t get into further details about the storyline, in case some of you have yet to watch it. So don’t say Goody Feed buey brother — we don’t spoil shows here.
But anyway, if you have colleagues taking MC tomorrow, you should know why lah.
The Process of Making Squid Game Season Two
The process of bringing the new season to fans of the show wasn’t exactly the easiest one.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk took six months to write season two and three of Squid Game. While this was faster than expected, the director admitted that his biggest challenge while writing the sequel was deciding what should happen with Squid Game’s main character, Gi-hun.
South Korean actress Jo Yu-ri, a new face in the thriller’s sequel, also shared that the audition process for the show moved slowly. The 23-year-old added that she waited two months between the first and second audition rounds.

Further, Hwang also shared about the difficulties in casting a transgender character featured in the new season. The director shared that South Korea lacks a large pool of actors allowing for “authentic casting” of transgender characters.
“We did our research. We tried to find someone who we thought could be the best fit. However, we weren’t able to,” Hwang added.
The new transgender character will be played by Park Sung-hoon, who also acted in the popular South Korean TV show “Queen of Tears”.
Squid Game Season Two Already Nominated for Best Drama Series Category in Upcoming Golden Globe Awards
If you watch any Korean shows at all, you should know that Korean TV shows don’t usually have more than one season. As actor Yang Dong-geong, who debuts a new character in Squid Game season two, said: “There’s a Korean phrase — there’s not a sequel that does better than its prequel.”
So, it’s strange that Squid Game is getting a sequel. But ok lah, perhaps Squid Game’s sequel will indeed be better than its prequel.
In fact, the second season of Squid Game has already been nominated in the “Best television series – drama” category for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, which will be in January next year.
Other drama series which were nominated include “Mr and Mrs Smith” and “The Diplomat”.
So, do you think Squid Game’s second season will win the best drama series at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards? Well, maybe you should watch the show first and decide for yourself.
