Data is no longer the expensive currency it once was.

A couple of years ago, 12GB data bundles went the way of the dinosaur (read: went extinct) and Singaporeans have to be contented with single-digit data bundles.

The way to verify if a guy is really in love with you is to see if he’s willing to tether his mobile data to your laptop for some YouTube surfing.

But now, things have changed.

Data is once again, growing in numbers and people are able to get unlimited (or close to unlimited) data bundles at affordable prices.

It all started with Circles.Life.

And now, it has spread all the way to Starhub.

Starhub Offering 50GB Add-On For $20 Per Month

Yesterday (22 February 2019), Starhub announced a glorious data bundle offering that they say will make your eyes pop out.

And to be honest, it did.

For just $20 a month, you can add on a 50GB data bundle to your SIM Only or two-year contract plans.

Anytime you want.

And the best part? It’s a flat $20 fee. Plus, it’s pretty easy to get too.

All you need to do is to go onto My Starhub app, obtain the add-on to your plan.

There’s no admin fee or contract commitments required for this add-on.

No Additional Data Charges For Using Excess Data

For those who are wondering, 50GB is a huge amount. One writer in the office who got an unlimited data bundle tried his best to use up more data.

And only managed to hit 14.7GB this month so far (for about 23 days).

So, yes, 50GB should be more than enough for you.

But in the event that you really used up the data, it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to live without internet connectivity for the rest of the month.

Or pay an extra $10.90 for 1GB of data.

Your data speeds will be cut down to a mere 1Mbps.

While that isn’t enough for streaming videos, it’s still good enough for your social and messaging apps, and surfing the internet.

The best part? You won’t be charged for the excess data.

Normal internet speed will be resumed at the beginning of your next month bill cycle.

Transparency Billing For Customers

So why is Starhub doing this?

This is a part of Starhub’s #HelloChange campaign where they provide customers plans with no hidden charges.

As part of their campaign, they had scrapped away all one-time administrative, activation and SIM card fees.

Add-ons like Caller ID and International Roaming are being offered free-of-charge as a standard as well.

Here’s what Starhub has to say (read: diss) about unlimited data plans available in Singapore:

“‘Unlimited’ data plans in the market today come with plenty of obscure limitations, from one-time activation fees to compulsory contracts and hidden speed and usage restrictions.

“Our worry-free data add-on takes such uncertainty and anxiety off our customers’ minds by offering clear value and transparency with superior network performance.”

Now, our only worry?

5G is coming (most likely next year), and remember what happened when 4G came?

Data were cut from 12GB to 2GB.

Let’s just hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
