What’s the most outrageous reason you’ve heard for an offence?
For this resident, it was having slippers stolen and put back – the reason being an attempt to check if they were anti-slip.
Here’s what went down.
GrabFood Rider Allegedly Caught Stealing Adidas Slippers From Customer
According to local news-sharing community sgfollowsall on social networking platform Instagram, a follower submitted a video showing a GrabFood delivery rider stealing a pair of slippers.
The incident, which happened on 20 January 2025 at around 4.11 am, was captured on a CCTV camera outside an HDB unit.
In the video, the delivery rider can be seen showing up with a bag presumed to be the delivery order, which he hung on a hook attached to the gate and took a photo proof of.
He then turned to leave, but not without swiping a black pair of Adidas slippers from the resident’s shoe rack before disappearing from the CCTV’s view.
The video proceeds to skip forward for about half a minute before showing the same delivery rider coming back into view and haphazardly putting the slippers back onto the rack.
Rider Denies Crime
After a short while, the resident is seen coming out of the unit to retrieve the delivery order, before sending the rider a message 2 minutes later at 4.14 am, threatening to call the police for theft.
In the screenshots provided, the delivery rider denied the accusation and asked the resident to “see properly” whether the slippers were there.
After the resident replied that they knew how the rider had “put back” the footwear, clearly indicating that they had seen footage of it, the rider admitted that he had placed the slippers back but did not take or steal them.
Instead, he claimed that he only did so to check if they had an anti-slip base.
Netizens Debate the Motive
In the comments’ section of the Instagram post, netizens can be seen debating the motives behind the rider’s actions. One commented that he saw the camera and put it back without walking into full view of the CCTV camera for fear that his face would be captured again.
Another suggested that he might have realised his mistake through his conscience – hence the reason for putting it back.
For whatever reason, you and I know that he was caught in the act and would face the consequences of his actions, conscience or not.
According to a Grab spokesperson who acknowledged that the company was aware of the incident, the service platform has suspended the delivery rider after conducting an investigation.
