The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) announced on Sunday (20 Apr 2025) that it will field Stephanie Tan, a 37-year-old former legal professional, as its candidate for Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election.

Ms Tan, a law graduate from the National University of Singapore who was called to the bar in 2011, has worked in both the private and public sectors.

Her professional experience includes working at law firm Rajah & Tann LLP, serving as an assistant director in the legal policy division of the Ministry of Law, and working as legal counsel to the Ministry of Defence.

For the past nine years, Ms Tan has been a full-time homemaker, caring for her two children who are now in primary school.

Advocacy for Caregivers and Children’s Welfare

Speaking to media representatives outside Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre, Ms Tan expressed her intention to raise awareness about support for voluntary caregivers in the community.

“I think we need to support them better, not just in terms of their financial insecurity issues and retirement inadequacy issues, but also in terms of their mental health,” she said, noting that caregivers face a higher risk of burnout.

Ms Tan was previously introduced by PSP founder and chairman Dr Tan Cheng Bock during a party walkabout in Pioneer SMC on 12 Apr 2025.

During that earlier walkabout at a Jurong West coffee shop, Dr Tan described Ms Tan’s decision to step forward as “a form of national service” and expressed pride in young Singaporeans willing to serve.

Focus on Education and Mental Health

At the same event, Ms Tan shared her passion for children’s issues, particularly education and mental health.

“I am very concerned about issues that affect our children, so in particular it will be education and the mental health of our kids,” she stated, adding that these areas are interconnected.

“When we do our education policies well, we can directly create a happy and healthy childhood for our kids. Vice versa, if we don’t do it well, our children are susceptible to mental health issues and problems,” she explained.

In the upcoming election, Ms Tan will likely face the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Patrick Tay, a labour unionist who has represented Pioneer SMC since 2011.

Mr Tay won 62 per cent of the vote in the 2020 General Election in a three-cornered contest that included PSP’s Lim Cher Hong (35.22 per cent) and independent candidate Cheang Peng Wah (2.78 per cent).

Pioneer SMC is one of nine constituencies that remained unchanged in the latest review of Singapore’s electoral map.

The ward is geographically located within the area now surrounded by the newly renamed West Coast-Jurong West GRC, which PSP is also contesting.

As of 2025, Pioneer SMC has 25,166 registered voters.
