When die-hard Nintendo fans heard that the Super Nintendo World area at Universal Studios Japan is opening on 4 Feb 2021, they jumped for joy, but quickly dropped back to Earth with a thud when they remembered the coronavirus is still around.
Yes, an actual Nintendo theme park will be built, but thanks to border restrictions, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to visit the theme park when it opens.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that if you’re patient enough to wait a few years, we might have one in our own backyard.
There Are Plans to Build a Super Nintendo World in S’pore
Video game company Nintendo released a 15-minuted long video on Friday (18 Dec) detailing all the attractions at their upcoming Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.
The host, video game designer and game director at Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, took viewers on a tour of the new theme park, and elaborated on Nintendo’s plans to expand to other countries.
At the moment, there are only four Universal Studios Theme Parks in the world eligible to host a Super Nintendo World, namely:
- Universal Studios Japan
- Universal Studios Hollywood
- Universal’s Epic Universe
- Universal Studios Singapore
And indeed, in the video Miyamoto says there are plans to open a Super Nintendo World in Hollywood in California, Orlando in Florida, and Singapore.
“Super Nintendo World is scheduled to open at the Universal Studios parks in these locations,” he said.
“But if you’re able to visit Japan before they open, we hope you’ll come visit Super Nintendo World here in Japan,” the game director said towards the end of the video.
So, what can we expect?
Rides & Attractions
For now, Nintendo is keeping tight-lipped over their rides and attractions.
One cool feature we do know about is their state-of-the-art Power-up Band, which was unveiled in January this year.
The wearable wristband, which will be linked to a smartphone app, will allow guests to have a more immersive experience.
Guests will be able to interact with various features throughout Super Nintendo World, as well as collect digital coins, earn points, and compete against other visitors in a series of mini-challenges, according to CN Traveller.
Universal executive Thierry Coup called it the “perfect fusion of the physical world with the world of video games.”

But perhaps the most exciting attraction so far is the Mario Kart-themed ride, named the Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge.
If the ride is anything like the game, guests are in for a high-octane treat.
Other details are unclear, but you’ll certainly see recognisable landmarks such as Bowser’s Castle and Peach’s Castle, and even a Yoshi-themed ride for the kids.
Resorts World Sentosa is reportedly investing S$4.5 billion into non-casino facilities, including Super Nintendo World and Minion Park.
As for when this theme park will finally open in Singapore, all we can say is that it’ll be sometime before 2025.
