Recently, Singapore was ranked one of the happiest places in the world; now, for the fourth year in a row, it is the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, according to a survey by the Economic Intelligence Unit, Channel NewsAsia reported.
Well not really, Since Singaporeans are already trying to survive by the skin of their teeth after all the heavy subsidiaries by the government.
Singapore is an expensive city
The report also stated that it remains the most expensive place in the world to buy and run a car.
The monthly expenses of a car could easily reach up to $2,000 and not to mention that is someone’s monthly pay.
The report added that Singapore is the second-priciest destination to shop for clothes.
That, we all can agree.
After a day in Orchard Road, you will be like:
Always look for the silver lining
Things are not all that bad, the report mentioned that in terms of food and drink, the cost of living in Singapore is on par with Shanghai.
I mean, where else can you enjoy a plate of chicken rice for$2.50?
This explains why Singaporeans are such foodies.
If you think your weekly grocery shopping is sucking your bank account dry, then you would be glad to know that Seoul, Tokyo, and Osaka are the three most expensive places in the world to buy staple goods.
It is more expensive to shop in Seoul than in New York as it is 50% more expensive to fill a grocery basket.
For extra nuggets of information
- Hong Kong came in second place.
- Asian cities take up half of the top 10 positions
- New York is the only city from North America that made it to the list
- Asian cities form the priciest locations for general grocery shopping
- European cities are considered to be priciest in the recreation and entertainment categories
Now, all this talk about expenses and whatnots has worked up my appetite. BRB, I am going to get myself a plate of chicken rice. 😊
