Do You Always Switch Off the Power After Your Laptop is Fully Charged?

During school days we always hear the constant clicking sounds of people switching on and off their power plugs.

They said that they were afraid of their laptops overcharging so they switched off the power supply once it’s fully charged, and then plugging in to charge again when the laptop is ‘dying.’

Do you always hear people saying different things about charging laptops?

Some say it’s best to unplug after it’s fully charged while some say it will damage the battery if you unplug after charging.

What’s the truth? Let’s try and answer this question that’s been plaguing some of us, knowingly or unknowingly.

Lifespan of laptop battery

The life span of an average battery is around 2-3 years, depending on the quality and how you take care of it. There are several types of battery in laptops, with the Lithium-ion (Li-ion) being the most common in newer models today.

So do you switch off the power once it’s fully charged?

The truth is, switching off the power supply or leaving it on doesn’t make all that much difference.

What causes the depreciation in battery lifespan then

One factor of shortening battery life is temperature. Yeah, are you in an air-conditioned area or are you under the hot sun?

What you can do to preserve battery lifespan

If your laptop gets extremely hot, your battery life span decreases. Thus, you should try to remove your laptop battery when you can and leave it somewhere cool. Cooling fans for laptops can also be used to help your laptop from overheating.

Obviously, don’t leave your laptop near the window when sunlight can bathe it every day.

If your laptop uses Li-ion battery, which in most cases do, make sure you don’t leave the battery uncharged for too long. These batteries can’t be completely discharged too often to maximize the battery life. However, if you’re a Mac user, you won’t need to frequently unplug after the laptop is fully charged every time.

Fully charged MagSafe Led will turn green and this indicates that your adapter stops charging automatically. Power won’t be used to charge the battery until it falls below 90%, after which it will charge again. This is to prevent the battery from overcharging.
