Surprise Studio Proposal Catches Sharp-Eyed Actress Off Guard
Wu, 33, orchestrated an elaborate surprise proposal for Tay, 28, at a photo studio. He enlisted help from their photographer friend who invited Tay under the pretext of a solo photo shoot for content creation.
Wu explained that catching Tay off guard was challenging due to her perceptive nature.
During what Tay thought was a regular morning shoot, a projector suddenly began playing a montage of their time together. Wu then appeared with a bouquet of flowers and proposed.
Tay mentioned her disbelief at the morning timing of the proposal, which happened around 10am.
The setup involved professional assistance from an event planner, videographer, and crew with microphones and earpieces. Actress and florist Kayly Loh also contributed by filling the room with floral decorations.
Tay’s family and friends, including her actor-father Zheng Geping and brother Calvert Tay, observed the proposal from a mezzanine floor above the studio. Her mother, veteran actress Hong Huifang, joined via video call from Taiwan where she was filming.
Prior to the proposal, Wu had asked for permission from Tay’s parents. He met with her father face-to-face and called her mother in Taiwan.
From First Meeting to Marriage Plans
The couple first met in 2021 at Italian bistro Supply & Demand at the Esplanade, where Wu works as head chef. They were introduced through his cousin, who is Tay’s friend. They began dating within a month.
Tay described their connection as comfortable and easy, noting their similar mindsets made communication straightforward.
Wu emphasized how their travel compatibility confirmed his feelings, mentioning they share an efficient and adventurous travel pace.
Despite initially keeping their relationship private, they went public in January 2024 via Instagram. However, before their social media announcement, attentive followers had already noticed them posting separate photos from what appeared to be the same vacation spots in 2022.
Tay disclosed that marriage discussions began early in their relationship, with both recognizing they were right for each other within their first year together.
When Tay first introduced Wu to her parents informally, she simply mentioned she was seeing someone. She later laughed about how her mother accidentally followed Wu on social media, calling it an amateur mistake.
The first formal meeting happened at Wu’s restaurant, Supply & Demand. Tay recalled Wu’s impressive effort in curating a four-course dinner with premium ingredients, while Wu humorously referred to this as bribing them with food.
When asked about dating the daughter of the famously fit Zheng Geping, Wu shared that friends questioned his courage. He described Geping as a gentle giant despite his muscular appearance.
Hong gave her blessings after the engagement announcement. In an Instagram post on 20 March, she expressed joy at her daughter finding someone to spend her life with, noting her pride despite knowing she would miss Tay after she leaves home.
Wu has developed a close relationship with Tay’s mother. Tay revealed their late-night conversations, while Wu described Hong as friend-like and open-minded, with whom they can have unfiltered discussions.
Wedding Plans and New Home
The couple, who recently purchased a home together, are currently busy with wedding planning and home renovations. Their June wedding will include traditional elements like a banquet dinner and a gatecrashing ceremony.
Tay has already selected her wedding outfits, which will include a nod to Wu’s heritage with a custom-made kebaya, honoring his Peranakan family background. The top will be pink because it’s her favorite color, with a green bottom to match.
Tay explained that she appreciates the kebaya as something she can wear annually during Chinese New Year celebrations, following his family’s tradition.
Their new home follows a “modern minimalism” theme with a clean white palette. Tay expressed hope they can move in immediately after the wedding.
