A 17-year-old teen acted as an errand runner for several drug dealers and hid drugs in a fire extinguisher placed at an HDB block’s wet riser.
After collecting and repackaging the goods, he earned payment for 80 separate jobs.
The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of his crimes, seeking a sentence of 13 years and one month in prison plus 10 strokes of the cane.
The defendant, currently 19 years old, admitted to three charges on Monday (10 Mar 2025), including drug consumption and violations of the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act.
Eleven similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.
Since the defendant was under 18 at the time of the offenses, media outlets are prohibited from publishing his name and personal details under the Children and Young Persons Act.
Teen Recruited Through Telegram
According to case details, the defendant was a student when the incidents occurred.
Around April 2022, he met a drug dealer named Anthony on Telegram and decided to work as an errand runner in exchange for payment.
The teen would collect and store goods for Anthony, repackage them, and then deliver them to others.
Through this work, he connected with more drug dealers and ran errands for them.
On the evening of 19 Sep 2022, a drug dealer asked the defendant to collect four blocks of cannabis hidden inside a fire extinguisher, offering $350 for the job.
After confirming with Anthony, the defendant accepted the task.
At approximately 7:00 PM that evening, the defendant returned home after his tuition classes and followed the dealer’s instructions to retrieve the fire extinguisher containing cannabis from the HDB block’s fire riser.
He contacted a friend who knew about the plan and asked to use his room to handle the drugs.
The friend agreed, so the defendant called a familiar driver to take him to the friend’s condominium.
Upon arrival, the defendant brought the fire extinguisher upstairs and together with his friend, broke open the extinguisher in the bedroom to extract the cannabis inside.
Caught During CNB Raid
What the pair didn’t expect was that Central Narcotics Bureau officers had already received intelligence and conducted a surprise raid on the unit, seizing the drugs and arresting both the defendant and his friend.
Tests revealed the drugs hidden in the fire extinguisher included 11 compressed plant blocks containing at least 329.88 grams of cannabis.
The defendant later admitted he planned to follow the dealer’s instructions to keep and later transport the drugs to others.
Investigations revealed the defendant had received 80 payments for working as an errand runner for drug dealers, ranging from $50 to $800 per job, with $4,607 in criminal proceeds still in his bank account.
The defendant’s urine test also showed he had consumed drugs. He admitted to taking ecstasy two weeks before his arrest.
