On 11 February, a video was posted onto SG Road Vigilante’s Facebook Page, featuring a Red Mercedes driver who was shouting profanities at a delivery man for hitting his car, only for a passing cyclist to defuse the situation later.
At first, the netizens mostly lambasted the driver for being self-entitled and “super inconsiderate” for stopping his car underneath the sheltered pedestrian crossing, while they expressed sympathy for the delivery man.
The Truth Behind the Mercedes
Just as quickly as the video was uploaded, however, a witness stepped forward to give the bigger picture of what actually happened.
According to the YouTube commenter Bekindbegood (nice name), the Mercedes driver hadn’t stopped at the sheltered pedestrian crossing on purpose.
Rather, if you pay close attention to the video, you can see an elderly lady in pastel pink shirt, a few shades lighter than the car and almost blending in, retrieving items from the trunk.
While it’s illegal to park at a sheltered pedestrian crossing, there’s no law or dictated HDB restriction that states that you can’t stop briefly to pick up or drop off passengers, which was what the Mercedes driver had been doing.
Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong
With that renewed perception in mind, the witness adds that the delivery man had knocked into the vehicle on purpose.
On one hand, the delivery man was annoyed because it was raining, and his road to shelter and his destination had been blocked by a larger vehicle.
Moreover, the witness noted that from their perspective, there had been enough space behind the Mercedes for the delivery man to detour around, but the delivery man had gone forward regardless of the consequence, except he hit a literal steel wall because the driver happened to be short-tempered.
On the other hand, the Mercedes driver was being considerate to his elderly passenger—who is likely his mother—by dropping her off at the sheltered walkway.
While the driver’s anger is justified since his car was bumped into intentionally, it doesn’t absolve him from his unnecessary and prolonged hurl of abuse at the delivery man, which had to be broken up by the passing cyclist.
In this case, both people involved are at fault.

Perhaps the moral of the story here is that we should be more understanding of each other rather than giving into our impatience and anger so easily.
The delivery man shouldn’t have bumped into the Mercedes in his rush, which led to his trolley of goods falling, and the driver shouldn’t have kicked up such a huge fuss.
As for the woman behind the Mercedes, she was having none of their ridiculous argument because she straight-up walked away after she was done retrieving her items, like she didn’t want to be involved at all.
As for the people capturing the video and commenting in the background, maybe they shouldn’t have jumped into conclusions and uploaded the transgression without knowing the full story.
Kudos to the cyclist for breaking up the argument though, because the two people in question looked like they were a few more words away from exchanging blows.
All in all, this is less of an act of vigilantism and more of a misunderstanding.
