Singapore’s known for a lot of things.
Being green as well as a fine city, lots of nice food and of course, being a multi-racial and religious country.
Which goes without saying that we don’t tolerate racism here.
So when you say something scathing on a public platform like TikTok, you better prepare yourself.
TikTok User Banned For Racism
If you guessed another one of these kinds of youngsters being responsible for this, you’re right.
AsiaOne reported that a teen had uploaded a video on TikTok criticising Indians.
The original video has been removed and TikTok has since given him a one-week ban.
However, a portion of the video can still be viewed on the @sgfollowsall Instagram page, uploaded on 20 October.
If you feel uncomfortable at the racist context of it, take care to avoid the video.
You can watch it here.
His English is not the best, which doesn’t really matter, but here’s a summary of what he said for those who found it hard to understand.
The clip starts with the youth saying he does not like Indian girls, saying that they are rude and always do ‘bad things’.
He also said he found Indian homes ‘smelly’ said their perfume made him want to vomit.
I feel like the only smelly thing here is the attitude.
He then addressesd Indian girls one last time, saying, “If you got hurt, I’m sorry, I don’t like you. I hate you.”
For some reason, the youth also brought up his girlfriend, telling netizens not to go and harass her.
Maybe to make sure she doesn’t get dragged into his mess?
The clip ends with him saying they will “love each other forever.”
But for you readers, you may also ‘love’ what’s coming next.
Reactions
Of course, netizens roasted him. Both for his questionable English and racist remarks.
Is it hot in here, or were those some burns?
A TikTok spokesperson said that they do not condone attacks on race and ethnicity. The proceeded to flag the boy’s live stream and ban his account for a week.
“We proactively remove such content from our platform and also suspend or ban accounts that have multiple hate speech violations.”
There is, however, a somewhat decent ending to this entire saga.
Apology
Around two days ago, @sgfollowsall uploaded another video featuring the boy.
This time, he had a woman with him in the video as well. She would occasionally translate for him when he had to speak only in Chinese.
Keep in mind that the video quality is not very good; sometimes the video only shows their foreheads.
The boy starts the video by saying he is “very sorry” and bows in front of the camera for a bit.
He said that he felt really bad and that his “heart very scared already.”
The bowing and sorry’s repeat for a while, with him adding that he will never do it again while asking for forgiveness.
Later, the woman translates the second part of his apology. She mentions he does not hate Indian people, and probably said it in the spur of a moment.
“This one cannot blame him, you know?”
I feel like there’s something a little off with that logic there.
The boy goes onto say it’s just that he’s usually very straightforward and could not control his anger.
He repeats his apology to Indians several more times after this.
