TikTok, also deemed as “better than vine”, is a Chinese video platform for short videos. The app is popular amongst young people for its similarity to vine, and has a bunch of funny content creators on the platform.
Funny short videos? Yes.
Unfortunately, a TikTok creator was caught red-handed without wearing a mask.
Went Viral
@lilbunny_23 …
Frankly speaking, going viral on TikTok isn’t very hard to achieve. As long as you’re funny, weird, or doing something out of this world, you’re guaranteed the views.
Users also recreate challenges originated on the platform.
TikTok user ‘lilbunny_23’ was recreating the Go Daddy Go challenge when the incident happened.
The video seems quite normal until you spot two officers in the background within the first few seconds. As the video progresses and more people appear in it, the officers are seen approaching the teen and her friends.
All of whom are not wearing masks.
It’s not surprising that the video went viral because of how it captured moments before a literal disaster.
The video has garnered over 338.7k views, 28.2k likes and 1024 comments.
Consequences
You should know by now that wearing a mask while you’re out is compulsory. Unless you’re doing vigorous activity like running, jogging or playing sports, you must be wearing a mask at all times.
With effect from 15 April this year, anyone caught not wearing a mask when they leave their houses faces a fine of $300 on their first offence. They may face a second fine of $1,000 for subsequent offences.
Which is a hefty price to pay for your ignorance, if you choose to leave your house without one intentionally. Of course, some of us do tend to forget to wear a mask when we’re in a rush. (This is why you should always have an extra mask with you wherever you go!)
The fate of the TikToker and her friends are unknown since the video ended abruptly, but someone in the comments of the video revealed that they were indeed fined.
Assuming that they are all first-time offenders, the total fine they face for the video is $1,200.
No mask? Don’t dance in public.
Surge in Users
Perhaps one reason why the video went viral so quickly despite its somewhat humorous nature is because of the increased number of users on the app.
Earlier in August, a Straits Times article revealed that TikTok racked up an estimated 1.04 million new downloads in Singapore. This was amidst the privacy concerns that data was being stolen due to bugs in the app.
Since the pandemic, more companies and brands, including influencers, have hopped onto the platform to expand their reach. New updates on the app such as live streaming and advertising have also caused an increase in sponsored posts and corporate partnerships.
And that means more professional content, aka boring content that nobody really watches unless you’re a celebrity or funny.
Despite its flaws and potential security threats, TikTok still has a strong userbase of 500 million users worldwide. While some have completely ditched the app in fear of their privacy, TikTok still remains popular amongst young adults and teenagers.
Moral of the story? Wear a mask while you’re trying to create viral TikTok videos.
