Two days ago we published an article about a hugeass large pasar malam + carnival with Uncle Ringo in Boon Lay.
You don’t know about it arrr?
That means you haven’t yet downloaded our app, so what are you waiting for?
In any case, do you know what sounds like Ringo, fits into a pocket and can make all our Singaporean Crazy Rich Asian dreams come through?
That folks, is the Ringgit.
13-month low against the SGD
Eh, this W mad is it, our calendar only got 12 months what, so why the subtitle says 13-month, and why got hyphen – ?
Ok, hold your horses and let me explain tolong.
If you don’t already know because you don’t read the news, – cos Goody Feed is all you need as it delivers news + entertainment + lobangs in hilarious voice(s) right – news broke yesterday that the Singapore dollar reached a 13-month high against the ringgit on Wednesday.
According to the CNA article, the “Singapore dollar rose to an intraday high of RM3.0650 on Wednesday” before SGD pang chance and eased back to RM3.0546.
Say Whattt.
The Magnum Comparison
To fully illustrate the magnitude of this exchange rate differential, let us utilize Magnum as an example.
Yes Magnum, that overpriced but oh-so-creamy-good ice-cream that even has a Pleasure Store in Singapore.
ZH: Eh W, Goody Feed is PG App/website ok, why you make the ice-cream store sound so R21?
W: But that’s what they call themselves what?
ZH: Lucky the ice-cream only comes in tub, if come in in stick form then. oh wait.
Case in point.
Lest you are unaware that Magnum is the unofficial comparative yardstick of the cost of living between us and our friendly neighbours up-north, let me tell you categorically that it is.
I mean haven’t you gone up to JB to have your metaphorical pants drop when paying for JB-magnum in 7-11?
Magnums are more often that not, priced almost exactly the same in Singapore and Malaysia, both in their respective currencies, regardless of exchange rates.
Simi lai eh I don’t understand
The Magnum Numbers
Ok, I hear you, here are some pictures.
Never mind the slight difference in volume, – I’m not even sure if there is any from experience to be honest, might be a difference in measuring system, say sans package weight – a package of three magnum sticks in SGD costs SGD 10.90 at no trolley NTUC while a similar packet in Malaysia costs RM10.99.
This means our Magnum pack costs RM 33.4085 while their Magnum pack costs SGD 3.5856 in contrast, if we use the 13-month high rate of SGD 1 to RM3.0650 for calculation.
Now to put it simply in words, that would mean that for every 1 loose-piece Magnum we buy in SG, we can buy not 1 Magnum, but 1 packet of 3 Magnums in JB.
Basically, the Holy Trinity of Magnum.
Now here’s a picture of a mediating monk to achieve some inner peace, because I don’t know about you, but my heart is in turmoil reaching out to my wallet.
Eh dude, that’s Luke Skywalker lah what monk
More than Magnums and Malls
Well, Magnum aside, Timothy Ho from Dollars And Sense wrote about why the price of Magnum differs so greatly between just a causeway apart as far back as 2014.
You can read that article if you want now, but for me, imma change some Ringgit, quickly clear customs and head down to some JB malls to get me some Magnum.
See, even our resident cat wants to go over now.
Here’s a simplified summary of the South Korea martial law that even a 5-year-old would understand:
