It is the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, and most of us are either back to work or back to school. While the first three days have been non-stop visiting, the next three days is probably mundane again.
However, do you know the significance behind the sixth day? It is not just another day closer to the end of the Lunar month. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most important characteristics of the Chinese custom.
How is it so, you might ask? Read on!
Poor God
The sixth day of the lunar month is traditionally known as “poor day”. Poor day? Yes, you’ve heard me. It doesn’t mean you’re going to be poor, though.
It simply signifies the day to send the poor god away, so as to attract good wealth and fortune for the rest of the year.
According to folklore, the poor god is the son of the ancient emperors Zhuanxu. During his lifetime, he acts like a thrift, wearing rags clothes, and drinking porridge. Even if someone to send clothes to him, he will burn them in the fire.
Practices
Since entering into the new year, there has been no cleaning. Hence this day is specifically to do a big clean, getting rid of accumulated trash in houses.
Legend says that on the sixth day of the first month, the “poor god” will enter the house that is untidy and dirty, therefore resulting in bankruptcy. Hence, as this unique custom is passed down, people usually use the sixth day to throw garbage to send the “poor God” away.
What do you have to do? Simple. Get rid of all garbage and clean your house to attract wealth and fortune instead. This is also the day where it symbolises the “opening” of businesses, so firecrackers are usually set off to welcome good luck upon them.
By sending away the “poor god”, some places eat pancakes, while in some places they tend to eat more local characteristics of the snacks that they have.
Now that you’ve exposed yourself to more knowledge, it’s time to send the “poor god” away!
