This article does not end well.
It is one of those truly regrettable and avoidable situations that leave you just sad.
Multiple news sources have reported that a child was electrocuted after she put a mobile phone charger into her mouth at her grandmother’s place in Bulandshahr’s Jahangirabad (India).
The gender and age of the child at this moment is unclear as there seem to be conflicting reports.
Some news sources state that it was a two-year-old girl while others state that it was a three-year-old boy.
Regardless, it is a heartbreaking piece of news and our hearts go out to the family of this child.
What happened
Razia and her child had gone to visit the grandparents on Friday.
On Saturday, one of the members of the family left the charger on after taking his phone out. What he did was not something completely out of the norm, people leave their phone charger or laptop charger on even if it is not charging anything from time to time.
The child then fatally stuck the tip of the charger in his mouth.
Upon discovery, the family rushed the child to the hospital to remediate the problem.
Unfortunately, it was too late.
The doctors pronounced the child’s death not long after they arrived. So far, there seems to be no legal action against the family or those involved.
We grieve with this family over the loss of a young life.
Child safety precautions
In order to prevent such a tragic incident from happening again, here are some child safety measures that you can take at home.
Preventing falls
Babies crawl everywhere they go. It would be advisable to put in place some safety guards around the house (stairs and balconies) to prevent them from tumbling down.
Preventing burns and scalds
We have all scalded ourselves somewhere before. From the boiling water or from the clothes iron. We know how painful it is and it would be best if the baby never has to experience it.
Do keep stoves, ovens and irons out of the baby’s reach.
Poisoning
Babies can put just about anything into their mouths. I know of someone who put dog shit into her mouth.
Take caution and store any poisonous chemicals (bleach etc) at places that are out of reach for the child. As for the hand and body soaps in the house, you might want to consider a child-friendly soap.
Electrical items
As we have learnt very painfully from this accident, it is important to turn off all electrical devices when not in use. It would be wise to keep children away from the place in the house that has a lot of wires as much as possible. You can also consider getting child-proof electrical outlet covers to prevent your child from sticking their fingers inside.
Every life is precious. Let us do our best to protect them.
