When going overseas, it’s important to be on your best behaviour just because it’s more pleasant for the folks who actually live where you’re travelling.
There’s also the secondary benefit of not giving your country a bad image, given the stereotypes we have about Chinese or American tourists.
Unfortunately, two Singaporean tourists gave a pretty bad representation of us when travelling in Thailand if what’s alleged is true.
2 Singaporean Tourists Fight Security Guard in Patong
The incident took place in the Patong Bay Residence Hotel in Patong, a town on the famous Phuket Island, according to The Phuket News.
At some time after 4 am on 15 August, two Singaporean male tourists, aged 21 and 22, allegedly tried to leave the hotel without completing their check-out procedure.
That ensures that you properly settle all your bills in a hotel, like any of the overpriced snacks in the mini-fridge.
A security guard, Mr Suphawut, stopped them outside the hotel and tried to tell them to go back in to complete the necessary processes.
The Singaporeans had a sharp rebuttal to the guard, and by that, I mean one of them punched him and then smashed a bottle into his back, according to Mr Suphawut.
Mr Suphawut replied to this “argument” by throwing punches at them and a brawl ensued.
The Patong police were notified of the fight involving the tourists at around 4:45 am. They arrived to break it up.
Photos showed one of the Singaporeans sitting on a kerb with a bloodied face, while another in white lay on the ground with blood on his shirt too.
All three men were taken to the hospital, implying even with a two vs one advantage and the alleged element of surprise, they couldn’t win. Ouch, my national pride.
Notably, two luggage bags lay beside the men on the road, lending at least some credence to the claim that they were attempting to leave the hotel permanently.
3 Men Involved Treated at Hospital
In the hospital, they were treated for their wounds. A man presumed to be Mr Suphawut was bleeding from his upper back area.
Police are currently investigating and no charges have been brought forward yet.
While the situation doesn’t look good for the Singaporeans, it is only one side of the story and it would be fair to have to listen to them before jumping to conclusions.
Thailand isn’t free from hostility to tourists. Recently, a Singaporean tourist’s friend had her head slashed with a knife over a fare dispute with a taxi driver.
There are also tourist scams in Thailand in general.
It isn’t all doom and gloom (and knives) though. In 2022, five Singaporean tourists walked into what they thought was an eatery but was actually a Thai wedding. The hosts treated them well even after they realised the mistake, even giving them snacks for their trip.
So, we’ll have to wait and see the whole story of the Patong hotel fight, although their losing a two vs one fight is still a bit xia suay.
