Ever heard of the saying, “The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow”? Yup. Teachers are that predominant figure to make it happen.
However, if a student-teacher relationship becomes more intimate, it may be an occupational hazard. Especially when the line is blurred and not clearly defined.
NIE Trainee Teacher Jailed for Sexual Intimacy With 15YO Student
Yesterday (18 Jan), a 27-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to two charges under the Children and Young Persons Act.

The National Institute of Education (NIE) trainee teacher was deployed at a school where he met a 15-year-old female student. Between February and November 2019, he was attached to the student’s school as part of his training.
Both parties subsequently developed a mutual liking for each other.
How did it happen?
Well, initially, the minor and some of her schoolmates sought his help with their studies. During one of their consultation sessions, the teacher and the victim exchanged contact details.
Over time, the duo grew closer and contacted each other every day. The student would also confide in him about her personal issues and seek advice.
In November 2019, the student asked her parents to hire the trainee teacher as her private tutor.
The accused was already done with his training programme by then.
Initially, the private tuition lessons were done in the student’s home. They were then carried out at his place afterwards.

Victim Would Sneak Out of Home to Spend Time with Trainee Teacher
On multiple occasions, the victim would sneak out of her house to spend time with the trainee teacher.
It was roughly three to four times a week.
According to the court, there were also at least ten instances where the duo participated in sexual intimacy.
Eventually, the girl’s mother woke up one day at about 6:15am and discovered that her daughter was not in her bedroom.
When the victim returned home at about 7:50am, she did not want to reveal where she had been. But afterwards, she told her aunt that she liked her teacher.

Three days later, the victim’s mother lodged a police report.
Court documents showed that the accused was aware that the victim was underage (well, of course). She was “too young to make sound decisions about certain things,” and the trainee teacher subsequently admitted that their relationship was incorrect.
Also, the trainee teacher reportedly had a girlfriend during that period.
