More and more young people are looking to join private car hires, and for good reason. Other than the fact that they have to be 35 years old and above to get a taxi license, the cost of renting a taxi is pretty astronomical compared to private cars.
But finally, things are about to change.
TransCab to Slash Taxi Rental Down by Almost Half
Taxi drivers have been complaining about the huge impact on their earnings when private car hires entered the scene, and this move is a bid by TransCab to help their drivers in minimising the losses from the competition.
“It (Third Party Apps like Uber and Grab) has affected their income and overhead cost. That’s why we decided to reduce the rental to help the one-man operation drivers, to help them lighten their burden.” – Jasmine Tan, General Manager of Trans-cab via CNA
New Rates for TransCab Taxi Rentals
Depending on the type of vehicles rented from the company, drivers are able to rent a vehicle for as low as S$59.50 a day for a Toyota Wish, down from the previous rate of S$90.
Chevrolet: S$66-72, down from S$94-101
Renault cab: S$88.50, down from S$114-125
The new rates will take effect from 1 Jan 2017 onward.
LTA to Relax Taxi Regulations
2017 is looking to be a great year to be a taxi driver. Along with slashing of taxi rental costs, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that they are loosening up on taxi availability standards.
From January 2017, drivers will no longer have to clock a daily minimum mileage of 250km and meet the taxi availability standard during shoulder peak hours.
Which is kind of bad for us because lesser taxis mean higher demand for Uber and Grab. And that leads to, you guessed it right, surge fares.
TransCab Not the Only One, SMRT also Offered a Great Deal to New Drivers
According to ChannelNewsAsia, SMRT has a time-limited offer for new drivers which ended on 23 Dec 2016. New drivers who rent from SMRT during the promotion gets 2 weeks free rental, followed by 50% discount on the taxi rental for the next 5 and a half months.
