Transport Ministry Responds to Picture of Bus Stop with Rails: 6 Topics S’poreans Talked About Today (27 May)

If you’ve bought a house in Jurong because you’ll have a 90-minute travel to Kuala Lumpur in the future, don’t hold your breath.

Because it seems like there’s a high chance of Malaysia cancelling the SG-KL High Speed Rail project.

At least according to what their Prime Minister said on Saturday.

But before looking at trains, let’s look at buses instead. Or to be more specific, a bus stop that has got people talking.

Netizens Laughed At Bus Stop Design, But Transport Ministry Says They’re Being “Creative”

Do you know about the entire saga about a weird ass Singapore bus stop? Netizens were wondering what the person who designed the bus stop was smoking.

It got so viral even we had to write about it. So we used our best and supposedly most handsome writer and made it an app-exclusive article.

Yeah, kind of like ST’s premium articles except that ours is totally free (and super fast). So download our app here and read this!

Anyway, Singapore netizens were very uncomplimentary in their praises of the bus stop design.

Well, the Transport Ministry has replied

They posted three pictures (shown below) with the caption: Wonder what happens when there’s insufficient space for a typical bus stop?

The answer? We innovate!

#DidYouKnow that our engineers are always on the look out for safe and efficient ways of overcoming land constraints when building bus stops?

Our priority is the safety of passengers and other road users. We also need to keep the traffic flow smooth on our roads.

The railings are there to prevent bus drivers from stopping directly in front of the bus shelter and block the roads.

The bus shelter is placed at the end of the bus bay because the bus bay itself doesn’t have enough space for one.

Sounds pretty legit.

You know, they could have used the drawing we did in our article to portray the point clearer 😀

But Singaporeans still not happy.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Guess you can’t please everyone.

As for me? I’ll take the above bus stop over this one any time.

M’sia Trying To Figure Out Ways To Reduce Cost of Breaking HSR Contract

Image: straitstimes.com

The prime minister of Malaysia has spoken, and he seems to be leaning towards cancelling the project.

Prime Minister Mahathir said in an interview that the terms in the HSR contract will cost Malaysia “a large sum money” if they drop the project.

So they’re now looking at how to reduce the compensation required to pay for breaking the contract.

The high speed rail between Malaysia and Singapore isn’t the only project in danger.

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) connects the east and west of Malaysia and is being constructed by China Communications Construction.

The PM says they’re now renegotiating the terms which are “very dangerous” for their economy.

Okay, westies, you can go cry now.

Plaza Singapura Toast Box Suspended For Hygiene Issues

Image: straitstimes.com

Hands up if you think Toast Box makes one of the best kopi peng in town.

I think so too.

Well, if you usually get your fix of kopi from the Toast Box at Plaza Singapura, you’ll have to find elsewhere for your fix.

Because the store has been ordered to stop operations for two weeks until 7 June.

Over the past 12 months, the store managed to accumulate 12 demerit points, with the latest issue for a rodent and cockroach infestation.

Toast Box regional manager, Vincent Lim, said that the store fully acknowledge the results of NEA’s assessment and will work to improve the cleanliness and hygiene of the outlet.

They’ve also closed the outlet even before NEA forced them to do so to rectify the problems identified.

I don’t know about you, but the moment they’re open, I’m going to go to this outlet for my kopi?

Why? Because once bitten twice shy, this outlet will probably be the cleanest out of the entire 1,000 stores the Bread Talk Group has for a while.

Before people start forgetting and getting lazy again lah.

PAP Town Councils To Increase Conservancy And Service Charge

This isn’t new.

It’s something that was actually reported back in February last year. But given how goldfish the social media generation is today, I bet you’ve totally forgotten all about it, right?

Image: straitstimes.com

Back in Feb 2017, it was reported that PAP town councils will raise their conservancy charges twice.

Once with effect from 1 Jun 2017, and another one from 1 Jun 2018. Which is coming soon.

The charges for each town council differs from one another so we’re just going to give you a general outline.

Don’t worry, you won’t be paying blindly. Notices about the new rates will be sent to you individually so pay attention to your letter box, yeah.

HDB flat owners will see an increase ranging between $0.50 and $8.

Commercial property owners and tenances will see an increase ranging between $0.05 and $0.21 per square metres per month.

And for market and food stalls, an increase between $2.50 to $17.50 per month.

The town councils affected are:

  • Ang Mo Kio
  • Bishan-Toa Payoh
  • Choa Chu Kang
  • East Coast-Fengshan
  • Holland-Bukit Panjang
  • Jalan Besar
  • Jurong-Clementi
  • Marine Parade
  • Marsiling-Yew Tee
  • Nee Soon
  • Pasir Ris-Punggol
  • Sembawang
  • Tanjong Pagar
  • Tampines
  • West Coast

The second tier increase will take effect a year later, with HDB flat owners paying $0.50 to $8 per month.

Commercial property owners and tenants will see an increase ranging from $0.05 to $0.21 psm/month, and the increase for market and food stalls is between $2.50 and $17.50 per month.

The money will go towards upkeep of the estate, including but not limited to pest control and maintaining of the lifts.

So now you know. Next time the lift in your estate feels a bit wonky, go to the town council and make a feedback. Feel free to make all the noise you want if they do nothing about it.

After all, you’ve paid for it, didn’t you?

27-Year-Old M’sian Girl Sets Up Crowdfunding Page To Help Pay M’sia Debt

1 trillion ringgit is a hard sum to even pronounce, let alone be the one responsible for paying the debt.

It wasn’t until I wrote this article that I know how many zeroes a trillion has.

Six, right? Well, I’m the greediest person in the office so I would know. Apparently, no: It’s twelve zeroes.

How will you react if you’re told that your family is $1 trillion in debt? Roll up into a ball, cry, and hope your door don’t get splashed with yellow paint?

Not this girl. She stepped up and decided to do something about it.

Image: straitstimes.com

27-year-old Nik Shazarina Bakti set up a crowdfunding page on gogetfunding.com and hope that fellow Malaysians and people around the world can pitch in and help out.

Just like how their forefathers sold their valuables so the then-government of Malaysia can make their way to London to claim independence, she hopes that Malaysians can do the same thing today.

She promise that all the proceeds will be given to the government to pay off the debt.

However, while some applaud her for her move, others were wary of donating as you don’t know where the money is going to go.

Despite the prime minister’s daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, vouching for her.

“This young person has taken her own initiative to do something by crowdfunding to save Malaysia. I happen to know her and am so proud of her. So if you can help, do support. Every little bit helps.”

Flash Flood at Orchard on Saturday, Partially Submerge Cars

Yesterday was a very bad day for people who were outside. It was raining non-stop the entire afternoon.

And the worst part? Some places experienced intermittent heavy and light rain, so you won’t know what to expect.

Here’s another thing that Singaporeans probably didn’t expect: A flash flood.

Image: channelnewsasia.com

But it happened, and it happened at Kramat Lane, near Orchard Road and Somerset Road.

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) announced on Twitter at 3.45 pm that the flash flood affected both lanes of the road.

Then at 4 pm, they said that the flood has subsided and the roads are passable.

Moral of the story: Don’t drive your car when it’s raining. You’d never know what’s going to happen to it. Heh, jk.

But it doesn’t hurt to Google and see what you should do if such a thing happens to you.
